The 1988 Meyney has a surprisingly vigorous and satisfying bouquet of blackberry, cedar and cigar box scents, more like a Pauillac than a Saint-Estèphe. The palate is medium-bodied, with rustic tannins but decent weight and cohesion, and a peppermint-tinged finish. Robust and stocky and still providing decent drinking for those with a penchant for old-school Claret. Tasted at a vertical at Château Meyney.

The 1988 Meyney actually showed more vigor than the 1998 side by side with touches of black fruit, sous-bois, cigar box and mint. It actually gains a little intensity with aeration in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and well judged acidity. It is unreservedly classic in style with leafy red fruit, but at least there is substance here, nice weight in the mouth with a crisp, lightly spiced finish that is just pure Saint-Estèphe. Tasted at the château.
If you lack patience, you will want no part of the 1988 Meyney. Tannic yet packed with fruit, the 1988 will need at least a decade of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 1996-2015.
