Pale, green-tinged color. Musky aromas of vineyard peach, quinine, ginger, snap pea, petrol and wet stone, with hints of exotic fruits. Large-scaled and rich but very unevolved. An impressively expansive wine with strong, soil-inflected flavors of lemon, lime and powdered stone. Finishes with terrific persistence. This has grand cru palate presence and complexity. "The best Montee de Tonnerre we've made to date," notes Hervet.

Winemaker Didier Seguier describes the estate’s parcel of Chablis Montee de Tonnerre as “a terroir for purists” and is convinced the 2002 (domaine) is the finest he has fashioned. It explodes from the glass with gloriously ripe pears and apples that are coated with minerals. On the palate, this wine displays seashells, minerals, and spices. Satin-textured and powerful, it possesses a stunningly long, pure, and expressive finish. Projected maturity: 2005-2013. While Bernard Hervet, who oversees both Bouchard and William Fevre, prefers the 2000 vintage in Chablis “for its minerality and austerity,” your author believes 2002 is the finest set of wines to have been produced at this estate/negociant firm in many years. Intense oyster shell, iodine and green fruit aromas lead to mouth coating, rich, pure and wonderfully intense flavors of considerable power and this has the size, weight and length of a grand cru. This should be capable of aging for years and is very impressive. Allen Meadows, Burghound 01/10/2003
