This wine was tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre surpassed previous bottles that I have encountered. Here, it has fine transparency on the nose, understated with fine minerality and tension. The palate is fresh and balanced with plenty of citrus fruit tinged with ginger towards the finish. This is a generous Chablis with a pleasing length in the mouth, perhaps one of the most sophisticated you will find this vintage.

The 2012 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre shows all the promise I sensed last year, when I tasted it from tank. Bright, chiseled and totally articulate, the 2012 dazzles with its combination of sculpted fruit, expressive aromatics and bright, piercing minerality. The 2012 is built for the cellar, but it will be hard to resist young.
Pale yellow. Classic Montee de Tonnerre aromas of white peach, powdered stone, smoky silex, elderflower and spices. Saline, dry and extract-rich, with the powdered stone and spice flavors carrying through on the palate. Distinctly smokier than the 2013 version. Penetrating, sharply focused wine with a very long, dry, youthful aftertaste.
Delicate nose and a strongly acidic palate. Lacks the openness of their Montmains – seems much more bitter and sharp. (RH)
