Punteggio 91/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Jul 2004

Good pale color. Precise, highly aromatic nose combines gunflint, citrus skin and pure crushed stone. Dry, backward and quite penetrating but not austere; the flavors of apple and stone dust the palate. This boasts terrific inner-mouth energy and lovely subtle persistence.

Creme fraiche and spices can be discerned in the aromatic profile of the 2002 Chablis Montee de Tonnerre. Light to medium-bodied, beautifully ripe, and elegant, this deep, juicy, lively effort displays red currants, slate, and pears in its highly expressive and extensive personality. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2015. Jean Marie Guffens is ecstatic about 2002. “This is the best vintage we’ve done at Verget. From Macon to the Cote d’Or to Chablis, it is like a concentrated 1992. We were able to harvest in each area at the optimal time. We have great ripeness, not overripe, with excellent acidity, and the bulk prices that we paid actually dropped. The only problem in 2002 was some volatile acidity during fermentation, so we used more sulphur earlier than usual. Alcoholic fermentations took an extremely long time, and some of our malolactic fermentations were completed before the sugar was all eaten.” A Peter Vezan Selection (Paris Fax # 011-33-1-42654293), importers include: Vin Divino, Chicago, IL; tel. Reticent, pure aromas of cold steel and powdered stone. Brisk and penetrating, with a powerful flavor of liquid minerals and excellent cut. Quite backward today but already shows exceptional delineation and length.
