The 2008 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano shows lovely intensity in its dark fruit, grilled herbs, licorice and earthiness. This, too, is another feminine, graceful wine with gorgeous length and a polished, harmonious personality.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to taste the complete line-up from Avignonesi this year. The Cortona Desiderio and both Vin Santos had not been bottled as we went to press. Production zone Argiano, Valiano. Prugnolo Gentile 85%, Canaiolo 10%, Mammolo 5%. Annual production: 700,000. Estate founded in 1974. Oenologist: Paolo Trappolini. Mature-looking ruby. Roasted and savoury nose and little bit stewed, improves with air. Sweet and slightly nondescript. Fierce tannic finish. (WS)
