(13.9% alcohol; 3.6 pH; made from tiny, thick-skinned grapes, according to Barnier): Good full medium red. Plummy, deeply pitched nose offers aromas of chocolate, coffee, mocha, smoke, musky gamey and underbrush. Hugely ripe, tactile, chewy and sweet but still quite young, conveying a strong impression of solidity. More about plum and chocolate than high-pitched red fruits or flowers but full of life nevertheless. This seriously thick, sweet wine finishes with remarkably plush tannins from fully ripe skins and a building whiplash of flavor. The challenge in 2003, noted Barnier, was "to capture the fresh aspect of the vintage and avoid cooked fruit." There's something a bit New World about this vintage, but it also boasts surprising life in the mouth and should go on for many more years.

Saturated medium red. Distinct suggestions of surmaturite to the aromas of plum, currant, loam and chocolate. Sweet, dense and lush, with deeply pitched flavors of minerals and chocolate. Wonderfully concentrated and deep wine, finishing long and sappy, with big, dusty, sweet tannins. With extended time in the recorked bottle, the wine's extravagant ripeness became less apparent, and pungent notes of strawberry, cherry, minerals, flowers and earth emerged. A great vintage for this bottling and likely to be long-lived.
(13.9% alcohol) Full ruby-red. Compelling aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate, minerals and earthy Cuba n tobacco. Very suave and fine-grained, with firm minerality contributing to the impression of sappiness. Not at all overripe. An elegant, rather feminine Corton with lovely inner-mouth energy. Finishes very long and sweet, with broad, melting tannins.
