60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot. Bottled a year ago. Their second label. The Cabernet is a de-selection from Sassiacia while the Merlot is grown specially. Planted in mid 1990s. Aged in 10% new oak for 12 months. Quite a savoury nose. Racy and big but rather brutal tannins on the end at the moment. Pretty vigorous and chewy rather than sculpted to drink well young. Good build towards the end of the palate. Sandy tannins and lots of juice. (JR)

Tenuta San Guido's 2008 Guidalberto is a very pretty wine laced with mineral-infused dark fruit. This is a decidedly smaller scaled, lithe Guidalberto that impresses for its overall balance and finesse. The structure of the 2006 and the exuberance of the 2007 are missing, but the 2008 offers superb drinkability and pleasure today and over the next few years. Dried flowers, licorice and new leather add the final nuances of complexity on the finish. The 2008 Guidalberto is Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Most of the fruit comes from vineyards that are separate from those used for Sassicaia, although Guidalberto always includes some barrels that don't make it into the top wine.

Cask sample. 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 10% Sangiovese. Deep dark purple-ruby. A lusciously sweet raspberry-coulis nose. Liquorice tannins dominate at the moment. Thick and dense but very well cut. Ripe fruit dusted lightly with a slate minerality. Bold, confident and debonair. (TC)

Tentuta San Guido produces Sassicaia – Italy’s most famous wine. An icon from the Bolgheri coastline of Tuscany, made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, its rise to prominence in the late 1970s sparked the Super Tuscan revolution.
