Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2016-2028, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Nov 2014

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 2011 is a little flatter on the nose than Moreau-Naudet’s ’11 on the nose, with lime cordial and tangerine scents that do not quite have the tension or complexity one expects of a grand cru. The palate is well balanced with crisp citrus peel, apricot and white peach notes, a fine thread of acidity and a refined and generous finish that compensates for the aromatics. Returning after a few minutes, the nose is finally beginning to add more complexity with a shellfish tincture, though it does not quite do justice to the quality of the palate.

Rich, layered and impeccable, the 2011 Chablis Valmur shows the Moreau house style at its finest. Hints of smoke, spice and light, floral honey add complexity to the rich fruit in a Chablis that is one of the more closed wines of the year, at least today. Ideally, the 2011 is best cellared for a few years, but it is gorgeous, even in this reticent stage.

Pale, bright yellow. Pure but subdued nose hints at underripe pineapple, white pepper, spices and flowers. At once juicy and rich, offering lovely inner-mouth floral lift to the citrus, white peach, pineapple and white pepper flavors. Very silky, fine-grained wine with a very long, spicy back end.

Intense fruit, very hard edged. Impressive in an aggressive style, but doesn’t seem to have the pleasure and flex that Chablis should have. (RH)
