The 2006 Pibran has a surprisingly sumptuous bouquet of raspberry coulis and blackberry scents mixed with vanilla. It is much more precocious than anticipated. The palate has a smooth texture and a touch of dark chocolate infusing the black fruit, and there is a discreet lactic element on the finish. This is a very good wine for a 2006, although the oak feels a little prominent after so much time in bottle. Tasted at the Pibran vertical at Château Pichon-Baron.

70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Potent oak scent – overdone, I think. Not enough fruit and structure for my taste. (RH)
70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13.25% alcohol and a very high IPT of 79. Aged half in new and half in 1-yr-old barrels. Dark purple. Blueish. A bit thin and taut but more ripe than some. A little bit skinny but svelte and velvety – quite suave tannins. Round with a very dry, inky finish. (JR)
