My admiration for the work of the Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari and winemaker Attilio Pagli at this estate continues unabated – Pagli began here, in fact, ten years ago when the vineyards and wine were the property of, believe it or not, the Italian distributor of Calvin Klein jeans. While waiting for the release of the Riserva bottling next year, the 1999 Brunello di Montalcino will provide much drinking pleasure with its sweet and powerful nose of red currants, mocha, and raisins, its solid and structured palate, packed with red fruit and mineral sensations, and the superior length and authority of its flavors. A wine built to last, to drink between 2006 and 2020. Importer: Kobrand, New York, NY; tel. (212) 490-9300

Bright, deep ruby-red. Primary aromas of sappy dark berries, spicecake, marzipan and subtle woodsmoke. Juicy, concentrated, youthful and pure, with vibrant dark berry, chocolate and baking spice flavors complicated by a suggestion of fig. Sweet, very long finish gives an impression of strong extract. The wine's tannins are buried in fruit. Has the balance to last well in bottle. This wine benefited significantly from extended aeration, and I found myself raising my score as I came back for more.
