Punteggio 97/100 · Da bere 2024-2048, Eric Guido, Vinous, Aug 2024

The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino may be immortal. It's impossibly fresh and pure yet powerful and complex. Wild strawberries, rhubarb, exotic spice and crushed blood orange form its seductive bouquet, along with the slightest hint of dusty earth. It balances ripe cherry-berry fruits with sweet spice and inner rose, all elevated by an enticing core of juicy acidity. This finishes remarkably fresh and structured, yet the tannins are round and soft, leaving behind an air of licorice as the mouth waters for more. This is a total pleasure to taste and easily one of the most successful 2004s at this stage.

Punteggio 97/100 · Da bere 2015-2034, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2015

What is left to say about Poggio di Sotto's 2004 Brunello di Montalcino? Still an infant, the 2004 possesses a striking combination of finesse and power. Firm tannins and veins of bright acidity give the 2004 much of its pure, visceral drive. Rose petal, sweet red cherries, spices, mint and licorice are some of the notes that open up in the glass, but the 2004 remains a wine of structure. The 2004 is just as thrilling today, as it was on release. Actually, it is even better.

Bright medium red. Musky, reduced aromas of strawberry, cherry, dried flowers, mocha and minerals. Silky-sweet and fine-grained, with good volume and a rather opulent texture to the flavors of strawberry liqueur, flowers, minerals and underbrush. Ripe but not heavy. Spreads out nicely on the back, finishing with ripe, dusty tannins and good grip. Needs time in the cellar-or in the decanter.

Pale greyish. Light and lively and a little rustic but heartfelt. Very lively and playful. Almost more like a Chianti than a Brunello but distinctive. (JR)
