The Il Poggione 1970 Brunello di Montalcino unfolds quickly to reveal exotic spice, dried currant, desiccated garden herb and waxy notes. This is remembered as a classic growing season with good weather and no major challenges. This wine carefully reveals pretty depth with undertones of forest floor, rusty nail and dried rose. The intensity is held back, but the wine is instead elegant and quiet in character with softly silky sensations. This bottle has held up well.

Fully mature and just mid ruby with broad brickstone rim. Softly brilliant ruby. Surprisingly pronounced and sweet with age. Wet earth, herb bitters and only hints of tar and tobacco. Still some freshness on the nose. Light and still has vibrancy. Very fine tannins. Impressive for what is considered a modest year. (WS)
