Bright red-ruby. Attractive aromas of redcurrant, sour cherry, plum, tobacco and dried flowers. Supple, suave and approachable but with harmonious ripe acidity and a solid tannic spine giving the wine good underlying backbone for aging. There's lovely energy to the red fruit flavors, and the persistent finish boasts excellent lift. Very nicely balanced.

The 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is another of the better wines in this vintage even if it presents a somewhat conflicted personality. This big, rich offering is loaded with dark cherries, plum and violets. It shows outstanding depth and surprising freshness, yet the hard tannins of the vintage lurk beneath, suggesting that no amount of adjustment in the cellar could bring this wine into the superior balance it exhibits in more normal vintages.
