Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2021-2024, Eric Guido, Vinous, Mar 2021

The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino displays a pale ruby color with an orange rim, wafting up with a pure display of mature Sangiovese fruit. I find cedar shavings, dried strawberries, orange rinds, sweet herbs and undergrowth. It is creamy and round, perfectly resolved from its twenty years of maturity, while showcasing a mix of sour berries and zesty citrus complemented by salty minerals and exotic spices. Earth tones and a note of tobacco resonate through the finish, along with a subtle tug of residual tannin that frames the experience quite well. While this feels a bit fragile and on the edge of its downward decline, the 2001 is still focused and full of lively energy today. Sampled from the winery's cellar.

Caparzo has turned out a beautiful 2001 Brunello di Montalcino. Medium ruby in color, it is a delicate, understated wine with classic Sangiovese nuances of cherries, tobacco and underbrush on a medium-bodied frame. It shows excellent persistence and a very attractive perfumed quality on the palate along with firm tannins and a long, fresh finish. A year or two of cellaring will be beneficial, but with some aeration this is a delicious wine to enjoy today. Tasted again two days after opening, the tannins had softened significantly and it was quite lovely. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham AL; tel. (205) 980-8802

Good medium red. Slightly reduced aromas of cherry and underbrush, with a light herbal quality. Sweet, juicy and silky, with cherry, raspberry and herbal flavors that reminded me of Burgundy. A subtle, rather delicate midweight with a pliant texture. The herbal note repeats on the finish, which features firm, dusty, slightly drying tannins.
