When compared with the 1989, the 1988 Mouton-Baronne-Philippe is much lighter, more compact, noticeably hard and lean, and has a short finish. Anticipated maturity: Now-1998.

Tobacco and tar aromas, with hints of ripe currant as well. Full-bodied, with soft and silky tannins and dark chocolate, licorice and lead pencil flavors. A little loosely knit on the finish, but very enjoyable.¿'88/'98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). Drink now. James Suckling, Wine Spectator 2009.

Ch. d’Armailhac is a Pauillac Fifth Growth owned by the Rothschilds, who also own Ch. Mouton Rothschild. Lavished with the same attention to detail and having benefitted from extensive investment in recent years, this estate can offer brilliant value in comparison to its First Growth sibling.
