Punteggio 89/100 · Da bere 2022-2030, Jane Anson, Inside Bordeaux, Oct 2022

Rustic but totally charming, a moreish salinity evident on the finish, salt-streaked caramel almost stilton notes, along with creamy raspberry fruit and higher acidity redcurrant and gooseberry. Dusky, truffled, saffron, cassis, wax. Even though this is in its tertiary stage, you can feel the Pauillac tannins, now melted and fully integrated but still holding the fruit in place. 13% new oak barrels for ageing, really a different time, with 84% of production in the 1st wine. Harvest October 2 to 15. Raoul Blondin cellar master (along with his brother Pierre Blondin, who is less well known but was also key). Patrick Leon had arrived as director the year before, in 1985.

The 1986 Mouton Baronne Philippe was the previous name for Château d'Armailhac, adopting its present title in 1989. It has a very fresh and lively bouquet, more vital and precise than the 1986 Clerc-Milon. This is a real surprise: lifted blackberry laced with tar and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins not unlike the 1986 Mouton-Rothschild. Of course, there is not nearly the same level of complexity, but you could regard it as a younger sibling, which is no surprise as the terroir is at the end of the Mouton-Rothschild terroir. If you ever see a bottle of this at auction or on a restaurant list, grab it. Tasted September 2016.

Now Ch d'Armailhac. Still very dark ruby with lots of fine sediment and a nicely shaded rim. The intense and mature bouquet came soaring out of the bottle as soon as it was opened. (This was the year when its stablemate Mouton was very highly regarded.) Strong lead-pencil aromas – much less obviously fruity younger vintages. But there is clearly fruit underneath here – and, still, a substantial dry whack of tannin on the palate. This has the most lovely nose but it needs time in the decanter and some meat – the roast spring lamb destined for it?! – in order to be brought to heel. Very fresh acidity but still masses of fruit weight. My score assumes all will come right in a couple of hours. (JR)

(Actually this was the brief era when this wine was labelled Baronne rather than Baron ' en hommage a Pauline '.) Still dark crimson with some ruby at the rim. Pure and aromatic and really fresh and vital on the nose. Really quite refreshing, fine boned, tastes as though at its peak though with none of the early austerity. Very pretty. Good balance and vivacity. Medium length. Much less dense and more evolved than the Lynch Bages 1986 tasted alongside it. (JR)

d'Armailhac

Ch. d’Armailhac is a Pauillac Fifth Growth owned by the Rothschilds, who also own Ch. Mouton Rothschild. Lavished with the same attention to detail and having benefitted from extensive investment in recent years, this estate can offer brilliant value in comparison to its First Growth sibling.
