Aged for 10 months in old oak barriques. Pretty snazzy winemaking. Very gentle tannins and lots of fruit. One to buy alongside Guidalberto 2011 at £30 or £50 for two? Lovely appetising finish. Real zip and lift. Much more open than red bordeaux of the same age. (JR)

The 2011 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia is juicy, expressive and radiant in this vintage. Sweet dark cherries, flowers, tobacco and mint all flesh out in a wine that impresses for its harmony and supple, gracious personality. At times Le Volte has been a bit different in style than the rest of the wines, here, but the 2011 is quite similar to the rest of the range. In 2011, Le Volte is 50% Merlot, 30% Sangiovese and 20% other grapes.
The 2011 Le Volte dell'Ornellaia (a 50-30-20 blend of Merlot, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon) is a gorgeous and silky smooth red wine that imparts bright tones of red cherry, blackberry, sweet spice and chocolate. The wine-s youthful freshness and fruit-forward mouthfeel is ultimately what makes it such a pleasure to drink. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020. This year Ornellaia celebrates the 25th anniversary of its flagship wine, the eponymous Ornellaia (1988-2013). General Director Leonardo Raspini and his team decide to celebrate with a commemorative edition of the wine packaged in an etched bottle with gold lettering.
