Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2025-2030, Jeb Dunnuck, Mar 2025

The 2008 Monteverro boasts a roast profile, with notes of espresso, baked blackberries, menthol, toasted vanilla bean, and turned earth. The palate is compact and concentrated, with ample richness, a glycerin-rich texture, and a kiss of sweet fruit and warmth through the finish. It’s holding on nicely for this ripe and saturating wine. Drink 2025-2030.

Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2014-2026, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2011

The 2008 Monteverro is a superb wine from the Tuscan coast. Dark wild cherries, sweet herbs, mocha, espresso and spices are some of the notes that flow from this beautifully balanced, large-scaled red. This shows marvelous depth and nuance, not to mention exceptional harmony. Monteverro is Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot that spent 18 months in French oak. This is an impressive debut. Ideally the wine needs another year or two for the French oak to settle down.

Monteverro is one of the most exciting young properties I have come across in a while. The vineyards are located in Capalbio, in the province of Grosseto. The estate was founded in 2003 by Georg Weber, a young Swiss man inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux. The 2008s are the first releases from Weber’s superstar team, which includes Michel Rolland and Jean Hoefliger of Alpha Omega in Napa Valley. With the exception of the Chardonnay these are all interesting wines. Prices are high for a debut vintage, but the investment required to make wines at this level is no doubt high as well.
