The 1971 Romanée-Conti Grand Cru was picked on September 27 and cropped at a small 22hl/ha. It has wide bricking with a tawny core. The bouquet is complex and quite profound with darker fruit than the 1978, melted tar and pressed rose petals, traces of blood orange and hung game. You easily lose yourself in these aromatics, like a more refined version of the 1980 Romanée-Conti. The palate is sweet on the entry with a caressing and almost viscous texture. This remains youthful, ineffably harmonious with an effervescent finish that feels long and tender. This is an exquisite Pinot Noir, possibly in graceful decline. Tasted at the Romanée-Conti dinner at the Connaught Hotel.

One of the highlights of the evening, the 1971 Romanée-Conti is all about silkiness, texture and persistence. For many tasters, the 1971 is the wine of the flight. I find the aromatics slightly lacking in focus, but otherwise, the 1971 is magnificent. In any other tasting it would easily steal the show, but then the 1961 arrives. Still, the 1971 is unquestionably beautiful and peaking today.
