The Fattoria le Pupille 2009 Morellino di Scansano Riserva Poggio Valente has turned balsamic and slightly medicinal during its bottle evolution. Those aromas and the perception of more fruit weight hint at hot growing conditions during the 2009 summer season. There is sweet cherry, cola, crème de cassis and something more powerful like a black liqueur or kirsch.

The 2009 Poggio Valente Riserva is a bit a mystery, as it is far less impressive from bottle than it was from barrel. Soft, open and expressive, but it lacks the body and depth typical of this wine. Slightly oxidative notes suggest the 2009 is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. This is a rare miss from Le Pupille.
The 2009 Poggio Valente Riserva (from tank) is totally sexy. Sweet red cherries, flowers, raspberries, licorice and mint are some of the many notes that jump from the glass in this racy, seductive red. All of the elements come together effortlessly. A final burst of Sangiovese acidity adds a kick of freshness on the close.
