Bright medium red. Liqueur-like red fruits, earth and smoky oak on the nose. Plummy and fairly rich but quite dry, with the fruit suppressed today. I wanted more energy and lift. Finishes a bit flat, with substantial drying tannins and an herbal element. Decent material here but offers limited appeal today.

The 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere is richer, deeper and fleshier than the regular bottling, but in 2007 the Lucere also possesses terrific balance, something that the 2006 never had. Dark red cherries, flowers, mint and spices wrap around the intense, polished finish.

Giannelli seems to do best with shorter wood aging regimes. When the Brunelli spend too much time in oak they lose a lot of the personality that makes his best wines distinctive.
