Punteggio 89/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2006

(14% alcohol-"but no higher than usual," notes Ambroise) Good full ruby. Deep, porty, liqueur-like aromas of black cherry and bitter chocolate. Sweet, broad and dense; not heavy but somewhat high-toned, with porty black fruit flavors given shape by surprisingly lively acidity. Strong suggestion of fruity dark chocolate. The tannins saturate the entire palate.

As always, Ambroise’s parcel of Corton le Rognet (red) was the first fruit picked in 2003 (on August 25th). Mocha, blackberries, cassis, and hints of leather can be found in its aromatics. Though served at the same temperature as all the others (deep in the cellars), this wine came across as substantially cooler. Its structured character, packed with tannin, displays cassis, black as well as red cherries, herbs, chocolate, and minerals. A powerful effort, it will require patience (as Ambroise’s Corton’s typically do). Drink it between 2010 and 2018. Importer: Robert Kacher Selections, Washington, DC; tel. (202) 832-9083

Deep, saturated ruby. Flamboyantly rich aromas of roasted black raspberry, coffee, game, smoke and minerals; rather cabernet-like. Huge, sweet and just this side of heavy, but with the fine grain of this extremely ripe year and just enough balancing acidity. The major tannins are freakishly plush and sweet. Really stains the palate with dark fruits, minerals and oaky torrefaction.

Some real layers of flavour. Now this is quite interesting! But still very gripping tannins on the finish. The finish is worryingly dry. (JR)
