The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is remarkably polished and silky. Dark red cherries, flowers, sweet spices and mint all flow from a wine that impresses for its textural softness. The addition of 10% Cabernet Sauvignon adds an element of darkness and juiciness to the Sangiovese in a Chianti Classico that has slightly international leanings at times reminiscent of Tignanello. Sweet floral notes reappear on the finish.

The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori (Sangiovese with 10% Cabernet) offers a different interpretation of the appellation with a deeper color and extra concentration. There’s a sweet chocolate note on the finish that is contrasted against savory tones of dark spice and tobacco. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. The past 12 months mark one of the most exciting times in the long, long history of Antinori. Marchese Piero Antinori and his daughters inaugurated their monumental winery in Bargino, about 20 minutes from Florence in late 2012 after a series of last-minute preparations and sleepless nights. Winery doors officially opened to the public in 2013. It would be impossible to exaggerate to grandeur of this sprawling, multimillion-dollar underground edifice. Angelo Gaja told me at the opening that Antinori’s new winery is the most revolutionary event in modern Italian wine. I agree.
