A much more masculine wine, the 2007 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio all' Oro is all about power. Smoke, tar, licorice, game and leather wrap around a deep, powerful core of fruit. There is little of the seductiveness of the Poggio alle Mura, instead this is a wine of pure power and masculine intensity. The hugely tannic finish has little of the sexiness of this radiant vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2022. Importer: Banfi Vintners, Glen Head, NY; tel. (516) 626-9200

The estate seems to be differentiating their wines a little more than in the past into an entry-level line and a more prestigious Poggio alle Mura range, which has now been enhanced with the addition of a new Rosso and non-Riserva Poggio alle Mura Brunello. I have to say the new Poggio alle Mura wines are distinctive and highly appealing. Importer: Banfi Vintners, Glen Head, NY; tel. (516) 626-9200
Dark mature-looking ruby with narrow orange rim. Elegant fruit nose with hints of dried fruit and tobacco. Soft and open-knit palate with just the right dose of acidity. At its peak, it seems. (WS)
