Punteggio 87/100 · Da bere 2017-2022, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Apr 2017

This is the last vintage of Sassicaia to flaunt its revolutionary Vino da Tavola di Toscana status. The 1993 Sassicaia represents the end of an important era in Italian wine. Perhaps its symbolic importance outweighs the actual substance inside the bottle. This is a nervous and tightly wrapped wine with an inward-looking and introspective personality. There are dusty mineral notes of crushed granite and sea shell with mild tones of spice and candied fruit. There is also a vinous note of winery or old barrel that I did not find in any of the other wines presented in this full retrospective. It seems to be a one-off thing.

This was the last vintage the wine was classified as Vino da Tavola. Deep garnet still. Very youthful and healthy colour. Fine leafy pencil lead nose but not green. Amazing freshness and purity on the nose. Still has fine dark cherry fruit, delicacy and finesse. Mineral, dry and mouthwatering. Elegant and still has some sweetness. Less dry and better balance than the 1996. (JH)

Very, very deep, rich, concentrated crimson. Very attractive, long, dense and well balanced. A bit inky and relatively simple still. Definitely sweet. Inky. Gentle tannins. Light. (JR)

A tannic, stern, austerely-styled Sassicaia, the 1993 reveals a dark ruby/purple color, followed by attractive cassis fruit with weedy tobacco and herbs in the background. New oak is present, but not intrusive. The wine is medium-bodied, with high tannin, good acidity, and a firm, structured feel on the palate. Give it 2-3 more years of cellaring, and drink it over the following 10-15+ years. The 1993 will never be remembered as one of the great Sassicaias. Wine Advocate.August, 1997
