Here is another spectacular surprise from Tenuta San Guido. The 1977 Sassicaia is a balanced and integrated effort with a generous load of dark fruit, tar, spice and licorice. This vibrant vintage delivers the ample pleasure factory you should expect of this Tuscan icon and it adds delicately aged definition as well. The elegantly evolved side of the wine exhibits ash, smoke and crushed mineral. These characteristics add a linear framework to the softer aromas at the wine's core. The mouthfeel is fine, polished and silky.

Very, very old, with evolution at the rim. Lots of orange. Very, very sweet. Thick and slightly rustic. A bit simple. Velvety. Slightly facile. Deeper colour than the Solaia 1978. Falling apart but with a long finish. (JR)
