My birth year vintage, the 1970 Sassicaia, proved to be a tasting disappointment. We opened two bottles and encountered a similar set of problems in both. Namely, the wine suffers from overripe and overtly oxidized tones that add to sensations of heaviness and flatness.

Very, very deep crimson, without much development at the rim. Inky. Liquorice, herby. Quite dry, without the sweetness of most of the other wines. Seems younger than many. Very, very long and impressive – though definitely made in a more old-fashioned way (ie, for the long term) than younger vintages. (JR)
