Good medium red. Highly complex, delicate, fresh aromas of red cherry, rose petal, bitter chocolate and menthol. Wonderfully silky on entry, then tight in the middle owing to its firm acids and pronounced minerality. A 2001 of superb class and precision, with a very long, slow-building finish and refined tannins.

Violets and black fruits are found in the aromatic profile of the 2001 Chambertin Clos de Beze. It has superb depth of fruit and concentration. Juicy cassis and blackberries burst forth on the palate, before being compressed in its tight finish. If this medium-bodied wine is able to flesh out, my score will appear overly conservative. Projected maturity: now-2009. Importers: A Peter Vezan Selection, Paris fax #011-33-1-42-55-42-93 and Atherton Wine Imports, Atherton, CA; tel. (650) 328-6639
Full, deep red. Wild berries, game and mocha on the nose. Juicy and tight but already showing superb intensity of fruits, minerals and spices. Highly perfumed and stylish, if still rather imploded. This has the juiciness and fruit intensity of the best Burgundies. Very long, bright and aromatic on the back end. The most impressive of these 2001s today by a clear margin.
