The 1995 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is an old-fashioned, muscular Burgundy that wafts from the glass with notions of plummy fruit, cedar chest, subtle spices and grilled meat. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and fleshy, with a thick, sinewy quality despite the largely melted state of its tannins, blanched by succulent underlying acids and concluding with a long, sapid finish. This really is a wine from another era, but readers who appreciate the style will find an utterly classic Rugiens.

Some bricking but still a ruby core. There is a trace of barnyard to the otherwise complex, spicy and mostly secondary fruit-suffused nose that precedes the delicious, intense and stony middle weight flavors that still retain plenty of power and punch on the solidly long if mildly rustic finale. I like the concentration and for my taste this has arrived at its peak because while it should easily continue to hold I don't foresee any additional development from here.

Domaine Michel Gaunoux is today run by Michel’s grandchildren, Anne and Alexandre, with a guiding hand from their mother. Everything here is extremely traditional, and the family has been quietly making rich, complex and age-worthy Pommard and Corton for over half a century.
