Note di degustazione
Medium to deep garnet colored with touch of brick, the 2001 RWT Shiraz opens to notes of tree bark and dusty earth enveloping a meaty, gamey core that is accented by touches of dried berries and potpourri. Quite a lot of fruit and savory flavors in the mouth plus chewy tannins to structure the long finish.

The fifth vintage of this 'Red Winemaking Trial', top-quality Barossa fruit aged entirely in French oak (thereby making it very distinct from Grange, of which a rather greater quantity is made) . This wine manages to combine the gentleness of the Magill 2000 with the life and freshness of Bin 389 (which is probably the bargain of this range of Penfolds wines). It is still remarkably youthful, all purple and dust, and still relatively unformed but it convinces that there is a pretty glorious future ahead for it that may well provide more subtlety than many of the wines noted above. The 2001 Shiraz RWT reveals an attractive dense ruby/purple-tinged color as well as an earthy, plum, cherry, and peppery-scented bouquet, medium to full body, and slightly intrusive acidity. The fruit and weight are such that the acidity is only a minor annoyance as opposed to dominating the wine’s character and compressing its texture. While acceptable, it could have been a lot better. Drink it over the next 4-5 years. Robert Parker, Oct 2004
