Punteggio 17.5/20 · Da bere 2024-2040, Jancis Robinson MW, Oct 2023

One of the more backward and ambitious 2009s. There's still quite a bit of structure – unusually Léoville Las Cases is quite a bit more evolved than this wine. Concentrated crimson and classic, concentrated Pauillac nose. Decidedly more Pichon Baron than a typical 2009. (JR)

The 2009 Pichon Baron is similar to the previous bottle. Precocious black fruit mixes with graphite and black truffle. A light marine influence becomes more evident with aeration. It couldn't come from anywhere but Pauillac. The palate is beautifully balanced with a seam of graphite interwoven through the layered black fruit. This is nicely poised for a 2009 Left Bank that seems to be slowly becoming more classically styled in recent months. Wonderful. (NM)

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot. Aged 20 months in oak barrels (80% new). Youthful crimson hue. Fresh and floral on the nose. Plenty of intensity and poise. Identical on the palate, the fruit juicy, the tannins strong but integrated. Manages power and charm. Only just opening and still a long way to go. (JL)
