Punteggio 16.5/20 · Da bere 2017-2028, James Lawther MW, jancisrobinson.com, Mar 2023

74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot. Aged 20 months in oak barrels (80% new). Garnet hue. A slight charry-chocolatey note on the nose then red fruit with a leafy edge. Juicy, fresh and open on the palate, the red fruit again apparent. Light but fine tannins provide an adequate frame. Not the most complex or for long ageing but very appealing now. (JL)

Smoky edged from the first nose (a true signature of the vintage) with gunsmoke and campfire notes. The fresh acidities of a cooler summer are clear through the mid palate, softened by blackberry, caramel and white pepper spice. Soft tannins, finessed, a little soft on the finish, no need to wait to drink this, but you'll find plenty to enjoy. No more Cabernet Franc from this point in the blend. 80% new oak. Tasted at BI Wine & Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Pichon-Longueville Baron has more cohesion and intensity than the Pichon Lalande, with fresh tobacco and graphite-infused black fruit that have some gusto. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity, not a complex Pichon Baron, but there is no question that it is endowed with fine mineralité. And, who can resist that vibrant, graphite-infused finish that lingers long in the mouth. Drinking perfectly now, I can see this continuing to drink well for another 12-15 years. Tasted February 2017.
