Any readers that don’t put stock into the ageability of the Collepiano owe it to themselves to seek out a bottle of the 1998. It’s a deep dark, auburn red in the glass. Autumnal spices, baked cherries, crushed fall leaves, balsam herbs…this is a veritable spice box on the nose and pure pleasure on the palate, so soft and finessed, with sour cherries and exotic inner florals that are still remarkably vibrant. The 1998 finishes with poise yet not structured, still pinching at the cheeks, but without slowing the experience, as nuances of hard candies and licorice fade. A truly stunning evolution has taken place in the bottle. This was the first vintage of Collepiano.

The Sagrantino di Montefalco Collepiano, first produced in 1979, is Caprai's more accessible Sagrantino. In top vintages, it has proven to age very nicely. The Collepiano is aged in French oak, roughly 1/3 of which is new. Caprai's 1998 Sagrantino di Montefalco Collepiano is a very complete and beautifully balanced wine that has matured splendidly. Everything is simply in the right place, and the 1998 should continue to drink well for another few years, although personally I wouldn't press my luck too far as the wine is in a gorgeous place right now.
