From my favorite vintage of the decade at the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, the 1971 Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru is drinking brilliantly, wafting from the glass with a captivating bouquet of rose petals, potpourri and exotic spices mingled with sweet berry fruit and orange rind. Full-bodied, suave and seamless, its intense, headily perfumed core of fruit is framed by ripe acids and totally melted tannins, making it an immensely sensual bottle of Burgundy.

The 1971 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru comes from the period when the Marey-Monge family leased their vineyard to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. It is fully mature on the nose with degraded red fruit, traditional Japanese green tea and iron piping, perhaps a little diffuse for my liking. The palate is again, fully mature with black pepper sprinkled over the dark berry fruit. Compared to say, the 1971 Grands-Echézeaux or Richebourg from the domaine, I find the tannins a little hard and the finish a touch feral. I thoroughly enjoy this wine, but I would not rank it amongst the best the domaine produced this vintage. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.
