A thrilling wine is the 1997 Sangioveto. Aged in 25% new French casks, it boasts a splendid bouquet of overripe blackberry/strawberry fruit, smoke, licorice, and spice box aromas. Dark plum-colored, with an explosive mid-palate and finish, this full-bodied, dense, concentrated wine (made from a highly regarded clone of Sangiovese) should continue to drink well (because of its low acidity and super-ripe fruit) for a decade or more. Blackish garnet, slightly lighter at the edge. Quite spicy on the nose, along with very ripe plum. Rich in extract and velvety in texture; the plummy fruit is ripe and fresh. Long, tarry finish shows a silky, elegant texture and benefits from enlivening acidity. Quite forward compared to the earliest, slow-maturing vintages of this wine such as the 1985 and 1990-partly a result of the vintage, but partly due, I believe, to a new philosophy in the cellar.
