Readers still holding the 2000 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo will find a striking wine just beginning to enter its peak window of drinkability. Sweet red cherries, tobacco, dried flowers, mint and licorice waft from the glass in a gorgeous, medium-bodied Vigna del Sorbo. The 2000 isn't quite as deep or rich as some of the other wines in this complete vertical, but it is totally ready to provide fabulous drinking now and over the next decade or so.

This estate more than held its own in the trying 2000 vintage, as the 2000 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo reveals. Darker in color than the regular Chianti Classico bottling, its smoky nose of berry and currant fruit and Mediterranean herbs is warm and penetrating, the flavors firm, well defined, and long, again with the bracing acidity which is something of the signature of these wines. Situata vicino a Panzano in Chianti, la tenuta Fontodi fu acquisita dalla famiglia Manetti nel 1968, che ne ha accresciuto la fama. Oggi è rinomata per il Flaccianello della Pieve, un Sangiovese Super Tuscan in purezza, prodotto per la prima volta nel 1981.
