Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2018-2026, Neal Martin, May 2019

The 2001 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has aged well over the last 18 years, delivering mulberry and crushed strawberry scents interlaced with pressed rose petals and almost pastille-like aromas. It is a significant step up from Humbert’s Premier Crus, as you would expect. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, a fine bead of acidity, cohesive and taut. Then, it just drops the ball on the rustic, hard-edged finish. It was going so well up to that point! Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2000 and 2001 horizontal tasting.

The 2001 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru from Humbert Frères opens in the glass with notes of coffee, chocolate, wood smoke, subtle cassis and dried berry fruit. On the palate, the wine is broad and quite full-bodied, with creditable volume and decent depth, though it's missing a little concentration and length.

Quite deep garnet – one of the least pale wines in the selection. Nuanced and pretty on the nose. Lots of candied sweetness on the front palate. Honest and slightly rumbustious. Big impact even if not particularly fine. Quite long and rich. (JR)
