Oak barrels have been used in winemaking for thousands of years. While initially their purpose was simply as a holding vessel, today it is much more than this. As we have learnt about wine production at a molecular level, we have discovered the unique interaction between oak and wine – adding flavour, textural complexity and increased ageing potential. These intrinsic qualities have seen oak at the forefront of fine wine’s greatest success stories – but also some of its greatest failures. The use of oak to improve a wine requires great skill and finding that balance has shaped the modern history of fine wine.  What is rather beautiful about winemaking, particularly in fine wine circles, is that despite the input from developments in science and technology, production remains an artisan craft, relying both on tradition and technology. The barrel-maker is a perfect example of this partnership and no one understands this better than François Frères. This lauded Burgundy cooper’s ties to the world’s greatest wines make it one of a very small number that have lived through the development and fashions within fine wine.  Today, business has never been better for François Frères; they produce 30,000 barrels a year and export to every major wine region in the world. The secret to the François Frères barrels historically, Gigandet believes, is their consistency, while the all-important signature toasting is paramount. To keep up with the ever-growing world of fine wine, François Frères produces tailor-made barrels that fit the varying climates and varying styles of each winemaker, meeting the standards set by today’s precision-led winemaking. Despite the growth of the business in recent years, François Frères still remains intrinsically linked to its homeland in Burgundy and the specific microclimate of Saint-Romain that is so important for the seasoning of their oak – another key factor behind the company’s success. “The microclimate of Saint-Romain, in a windy and pollution-free environment is ideal for the seasoning and drying of the oak. This oxidation of phenolic compounds under the influence of fungi, releases enzymes that hydrolyse the phenolic compounds, reducing the wood’s astringency, producing oak of the finest quality for wine production,” Gigandet tells me. The art of the cooper is much more than just sawing and toasting – it’s about sourcing, traceability, control of drying time and heating, hygiene, temperature control, sorting and more. With increased knowledge, the quality of the barrels, like that of the wines, has greatly improved. Even just a few years ago, Gigandet admits that in colder Burgundy vintages, sometimes their barrels jarred with the wine – they “brought too much tension and could sometimes seem too austere”. But now they have a better understanding of the qualities their barrels can bring to Burgundy: “François Frères barrels remain attractive to winemakers because they are great at retaining freshness and minerality.” Perhaps most importantly, François Frères wants its barrels to amplify a wine’s intrinsic qualities. “It wants to accentuate the beautiful tannic structure of a wine, contribute to its flavour but without excess of sweetness from the toasting, as well as amplifying the wine's tension and minerality, helping retain its freshness and its fruit,” Gigandet says. As technology has developed, so has François Frères. It is what Gigandet aptly calls “the evolution of taste” – “the cask has evolved considerably over the last few decades along with the quality of the wines. Today, the barrel is much more specific, manufacturing almost tailor-made barrels for each customer’s needs.” The business was founded by Joseph François in the early 1900s, never imagining that being a cooper would become a full-time job. Back then, Gigandet reminds us, “It took several trades to live.” But the next generation, Robert and Henri François, saw the demand for oak casks rise, at that time mainly used to transport wines. They took the operation full-time, creating the François Frères brand in 1942. In those days, as Gigandet points out, “The tradition of maturing wines in barrels was reserved only for the very top red and white wines of Burgundy and the great Bordeaux châeaux.” Even within these regions, barrels were a luxury, re-used year after year given their expense, therefore keeping the demand for new barrels low. By the 1960s the brothers were met by the development of stainless steel and plastic containers. The barrel quickly lost it supremacy as the preferred vessel for transportation and demand plummeted. It was only the top producers that helped keep the cooperage going. By the 1970s François Frères was producing barrels for one of the world’s most famous estates, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti – a partnership that would be instrumental in the continuation of the business through a difficult period. The next generation – Robert's son, Jean – was confronted by the economic downturn of the early 1970s and turned to export to save the family business. Fortuitously at this time, oenologists in the United States started to highlight how ageing wines in new oak barrels brought complementary flavours and complexity to the wines. In the 1980s, the French market caught onto the idea and both export and domestic markets grew. The oak barrel was entering an era where it would become the star of the show – and a must for all top producers. François Frères’s reputation for working with the best saw it perfectly placed to capitalise on this new-found love for the barrel. But according to Gigandet, it wasn’t just the fashion of using new oak in the 1980s and ’90s that saw such a huge increase in demand. This trend emerged just as wine exports exploded. What he calls “the democratisation of wine” saw the world of wine suddenly open up to the middle classes – and this increase in sales saw an ever-increasing need to maintain quality and improve consistency. Such demand prompted and funded a better scientific and technological understanding of wine production. More importantly for François Frères, it fuelled the need for a better understanding of what barrel-ageing does to wine – and why. It was already clear that contact with new oak changed wine profoundly. Most obviously the aromas and flavours of the wine develop, becoming more complex. These aromas and flavours are formed during the toasting of the barrels. “It is this toasting of the barrel that remains the signature of the cooper,” explains Gigandet. But the oak didn’t just impact the flavour, they came to understand that, being porous, oak allowed the wine to undergo “controlled oxygenation”. The exchange of air through the oak staves, in particular for red wines, helps stabilise the colour and polymerise the tannins. This polymerisation not only softens the wine, but brings a textural complexity, a millefeuille layering of mouth-feel brought about by the linking of long tannin chains, encouraged by the micro-oxygenation process that the wine goes through when aged in oak barrel. “François Frères barrels are ageing tools, which contribute to the textural improvement of wines, when used wisely,” Gigandet explains. As the wine world’s love of oak grew, François Frères’ main export customers went from little-known names to pioneers in their respective regions – with Robert Mondavi in the US, Angelo Gaja in Italy, Nicolas Catena in Argentina and Australia’s Rosemount winery. Each of these producers further cemented the cooper’s reputation, representing the very pinnacle of oak barrel production. Of course, like all fashions, the oak craze of the ’90s saw some extreme uses – 200% new oak ageing or an over-reliance on oak to provide flavour to wines that lacked the natural concentration to carry it. This saw many producers and consumers react strongly against its presence in wine at all. Even Gigandet admits that there are wines with “excess woodiness” to their detriment. Today, the barrel also has to compete with new trends in wine maturation – concrete eggs and clay amphorae, for instance. But while these new vessels have captured the imagination of the world’s top winemakers, it is not necessarily at the expense of the barrel. “The barrel has an important oenological role in the development of wines from certain grape varieties,” states Gigandet – notably Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir. But he also outlines how different ageing vessels combined can also benefit a wine’s potential for complexity. This is certainly the case amongst some leading producers in Bordeaux and Burgundy that are using both oak barrels and alternative ageing vessels. Coopers like François Frères have weathered the changing relationship wine has had with the barrel; with shifting views of critics and drinkers over the last century. Fortunately for fine wine lovers, there’s little sign of oak fading into the background. Oak remains a vital ingredient in many of the world’s greatest wines, adding to its flavour, textural complexity and – of course – ageing potential. When visiting the cellars of Domaine Hubert Lamy, you are likely to come out a lot wiser than you were when you went in. Olivier Lamy has been experimenting ever since he joined his father at the domaine in 1995, and he loves to share his findings.  On our last visit we were given two white wines blind and asked to assess them. One thing seemed immediately clear: with its deeper colour and more developed savoury tones, one wine was older than the other. “No” he replied. “They are the same age.” Okay, perhaps the reason for such variation in development is due to the wines coming from two different quality sites – a Grand Cru versus a village wine for instance? “No, it is the same vineyard,” he replied. Perplexed, the only other solution I thought must be his high-density plantings. (Olivier has planted parts of his vineyard three times the density of the norm in Burgundy, with up to 30,000 vines per hectare), the result being smaller, more flavourful berries. Wrong again.   “Wrong experiment,” he smirks, leaving us completely stumped. He presents the two bottles and the answer lies with the capsules. Both wines have the same cork closure but one has the traditional metal capsule seal, the other bottle has been dipped in wax. It is the wax capsule that seems not only younger and fresher, but more texturally complex, yet both the wines are from exactly the same vineyard, with the same vine density and vintage. It is simply the closure that has preserved one wine so much better.   Olivier has been experimenting with closures for years. There have long been concerns about natural cork, with the risk of cork taint top of the list of potential problems, but it was the issue of premature oxidation, particularly with white Burgundy, that led Olivier to investigate whether maybe the problem lay with the closure.  Despite the drop in natural cork’s popularity and their replacement with alternative, “technical” corks and screwcaps, the natural cork still has plenty of advocates, and it remains the most sustainable and natural of solutions for many. A better understanding of the causes of cork taint has vastly improved the natural cork’s reliability and reputation, yet “being a natural product there remain irregularities in the cork,” says Olivier. Natural cork is irregular in structure, therefore allowing different levels of oxygen ingress, meaning that the same wine can mature differently depending on the specific cork, and resulting in bottle variation.  Olivier also believes the irregularities of cork have become worse in recent years due to climate change, with the warmer temperatures resulting in even less consistent cork.  The benefit of the wax capsule, according to Lamy, is that it acts like a “bandage”, offsetting the irregularities of the cork. His grandfather and many other winemakers often used wax capsules for wines destined for their personal cellars; it was the reliable ageing capacity of these wines that prompted his experiments. Trialling the effects of waxed and unwaxed capsules since 2009, he decided to use wax capsules on all his wines in 2016. Over this time, he has experimented with varying diameters and lengths of cork, different treatments, as well as testing plastic, agglomerate, and technical corks before concluding that longer (54mm), technical DIAMs (a natural cork-based agglomerate closure), under wax seal produce the best results and best protect against premature oxidation.  Does this mean we have a definitive answer to the question that has plagued white Burgundy for the last couple of decades regarding premature oxidation? While his experiments certainly seem to imply that the irregularity of natural corks could be one of the biggest culprits and wax capsules one of the most successful solutions, he does not believe it is only the cork which is at fault. “There are two problems,” he says. “Poor-quality corks and the fact that wines are more fragile these days.”  The increased fragility of white Burgundy, Lamy believes, is a modern phenomenon. Climate change produces riper grapes, combine this with too many new barrels, modern presses that are too protective and you have wines that are more susceptible to oxidation. All too aware of this concern, many vignerons, Lamy believes, attempt to overprotect their wines, adding too much anti-oxidative sulphur dioxide (SO2) throughout the winemaking process. Counter-intuitively, this in fact makes the wines more susceptible to oxidation. When wine is made in a more protective environment, the more volatile phenolics remain in the wine, whereas these will drop out of a wine  when it is made oxidatively at the early stages of vinification, resulting in a much more stable wine.   Despite vignerons’ better understanding of the effects protective winemaking has on long-term ageing, these techniques are still used by many because it makes the wines so much more approachable in their youth. Many white wines today are built on developing these youthful aromas at the expense of ageing potential, Lamy argues. This is, he says, is in direct contrast with the past, where wines were built on texture, remaining fairly closed in their youth, with the aromas only developing with age.  There are still many traditional vignerons in Burgundy producing textural white wines built to age – with Lamy (who does not enjoy young, aromatic Burgundy) being one of them. With the warming climate, he has, however, had to adapt his winemaking to protect these more fragile wines. These days he manages the press cycle according to the vintage and allows for more solids when required.  With all the wines now bottled under DIAM and wax capsules, all Lamy can do now is wait. But, if his experiments are anything to go by, the risks of premature oxidation are low. Of course, he’s not sitting back – the dynamic winemaker is looking to experiment even more, pushing the boundaries to produce the best, and most age-worthy, wine possible.

Nel complesso, il raccolto 2024 è stato il più piccolo di Bordeaux dal 1991 – con la regione che ha prodotto 332 milioni di litri di vino. Ciò è in parte dovuto al calo della superficie vitata, con una resa media di 35 hl/ha – leggermente superiore a quella delle annate 2021, 2017 o 2013. Approfondendo, tuttavia, emerge una differenza significativa tra la Riva Sinistra e la Riva Destra – con 34,4 hl/ha a Saint-Emilion, Pomerol e Fronsac, contro una media di 30,8 hl/ha nel Médoc e nelle Graves. 
 È un anno in cui è difficile generalizzare, anche all’interno di ciascun comune, poiché tenute confinanti hanno prodotto risultati drasticamente diversi nell’annata. Come ha spiegato David Suire di Ch. Laroque, ci sono stati approcci molto vari alle sfide dell’anno, qualcosa che si riflette nei vini prodotti. 
 RIVE DESTRA 
 Quest’anno, ancora una volta, la Riva Destra ha offerto maggiore coerenza rispetto alla Sinistra. Sebbene sia stata comunque eterogenea, la dimensione più piccola delle tenute ha favorito il successo – rendendo più facile trattare e vendemmiare nelle strette finestre di tempo asciutto. Ovunque ci si trovasse, tuttavia, è stato un anno impegnativo: come ha detto Christian Moueix, “Il sole non si può sostituire.” Oltre al meteo più coperto, la grandine ha colpito Fronsac, Canon-Fronsac e Lalande-de-Pomerol a giugno, con alcune tenute che hanno perso l’intero raccolto, sebbene Pomerol e Saint-Emilion siano in gran parte scampate. 
 Pomerol 
 Per Noëmie Durantou (Ch. l’Eglise-Clinet), il 2024 è stato un avversario duro – ma uno contro cui sapeva di poter vincere, e ripensandoci, che partita è stata: come certamente indicano i suoi vini. Per lei, ci sono stati diversi elementi chiave nella stagione di crescita: la copertura nuvolosa che ha ridotto l’escursione termica (ricorda notti calde, insonni), l’invaiatura tardiva, le mattine nebbiose che hanno aumentato la pressione della botrite in prossimità della vendemmia e il livello di umidità dell’anno – 80% a Pomerol, contro un più normale 50-60%. 
 La grandine che ha colpito Lalande-de-Pomerol a giugno è sconfinata un po’ a Pomerol, ma la maggior parte delle tenute è sfuggita a impatti seri – con solo un leggero tocco avvertito a Lafleur a Feytit-Clinet, per esempio. Il trattamento delle vigne ha posto una sfida aggiuntiva per il team di Clinet, che deve tenere conto dell’orario della scuola adiacente, lavorando attorno alla presenza di bambini e/o genitori, oltre alle condizioni inclementi. 
 La vendemmia è iniziata a Pomerol leggermente prima che nella vicina Saint-Emilion, prendendo il via già dal 16 settembre, ma la maggior parte ha iniziato a portare in cantina il Merlot dal 20 del mese, e il Cabernet è stato completato entro il 4 ottobre (sebbene alcuni produttori avessero tutto in cantina entro la fine di settembre). Le rese sono variate in modo significativo – dal secondo raccolto più piccolo dal 1991 a Belle-Brise al secondo più grande degli ultimi 25 anni a Lafleur. 
 Jeremy Chasseuil (Feytit-Clinet) ha sottolineato come, per lui, lasciare il vino sulle fecce per due mesi sia stato fondamentale – aiutando a costruire la texture, rilasciando polisaccaridi che conferiscono peso al centro bocca del vino. Sebbene il 2024 non abbia prodotto gli stili più opulenti di Pomerol, i migliori conservano una trama soffice e un’esoticità negli aromi che completa l’acidità naturalmente elevata dell’anno. Sebbene la qualità non sia del tutto coerente qui, ci sono molti punti di forza. 
 I nostri preferiti a Pomerol: Belle-Brise, Eglise-Clinet, Guillot Clauzel, La Conseillante, Lafleur, Le Pin, Vieux Château Certan Saint-Emilion 
 C’è stata una differenza notevole tra Pomerol e Saint-Emilion – con Saint-Emilion che ha visto significativamente più pioggia tra aprile e giugno, con 278 mm contro 199 mm a Pomerol. Nonostante ciò, l’altopiano calcareo della regione ha dato il meglio – permettendo all’acqua di drenare lontano dalle vigne, nonostante abbia raggiunto livelli record (ad Ausone, il livello nel loro pozzo è stato il più alto di sempre). Agosto, tuttavia, è stato significativamente più secco sulla Riva Destra – con circa la metà delle precipitazioni normali. 
 Qui la vendemmia è iniziata un po’ più tardi. Sebbene alcuni abbiano iniziato già il 17 settembre (Cheval Blanc, Canon, per esempio), la maggior parte ha aspettato fino al 27, e diverse tenute hanno rimandato fino ai primi di ottobre. Nonostante le sfide dell’anno (“È stata una guerra,” ha detto Pierre-Olivier Clouet di Cheval Blanc), la resa complessiva dell’appellazione è risultata abbastanza nella media – sebbene variata tra le tenute. 
 Ad Angélus, è stata la 40ª vendemmia di Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, e la bottiglia reca una sezione di tronco d’albero con 40 anelli in tributo. A Ch. Beauséjour, è stata la prima annata prodotta nella nuova cantina di Joséphine Duffau-Lagarrosse, qualcosa di cui è stata particolarmente grata, poiché le ha permesso di suddividere il vigneto in parcelle più piccole e lavorare con maggiore precisione. 
 Saint-Emilion è così grande che inevitabilmente quest’anno c’è un’ampia gamma di vini. Sebbene alcuni possano risultare eccessivamente taglienti, austeri o astringenti, ci sono vini molto impressionanti, testurizzati, stratificati che mantengono tensione e offrono al contempo abbondanza di frutto e peso. Cheval Blanc, per esempio, è un vino molto serio che avrà bisogno di tempo – un vero contrasto con molti dei 2024 destinati a essere approcciabili presto. Vale la pena evidenziare Ch. Laroque, una tenuta che osserviamo da un po’, dove David Suire continua a produrre vini dal valore straordinario. 
 I nostri preferiti a Saint-Emilion: Ausone, Cheval Blanc, Clos de Sarpe, Figeac, L’If, Laroque, Tertre Roteboeuf RIVA SINISTRA 
 Le rese sulla Riva Sinistra – a parte i bianchi – sono state in genere inferiori rispetto alla Destra. Variano significativamente tra le tenute, tuttavia, con rese che vanno dal minimo storico alla normalità. Sebbene ci siano annate in cui siti minori nel Médoc e nell’Haut-Médoc eccellono, il 2024 in gran parte non lo è stato – questa è stata un’annata in cui la qualità del terroir, così come i mezzi per effettuare una selezione rigorosa, sono stati fondamentali. Abbiamo riscontrato che la qualità qui era ancora più eterogenea che nel resto della Gironda, tuttavia ci sono ancora vini brillanti da trovare. 
 Saint-Estèphe 
 La qualità a Saint-Estèphe è mista nel 2024. La posizione più fresca e settentrionale del comune non è stata necessariamente un vantaggio quest’anno, né lo sono stati i suoli più ricchi di argilla – che sono stati un tale vantaggio nelle recenti annate calde e secche. Le tenute con vigne su ghiaie ben drenanti se la sono cavata meglio, tuttavia ci sono molte variabili nell’equazione della qualità quest’anno. 
 Sebbene non tutte le tenute abbiano prosperato, ci sono qui picchi seri, con Montrose in lizza per il vino dell’annata – offrendo un livello di densità e complessità che si è davvero distinto nelle nostre degustazioni. È la seconda versione del loro Grand Vin a provenire esclusivamente dalla Terrazza Quattro (T4), una decisione che sta chiaramente dando frutti, e abbiamo anche avuto il primo assaggio del vino non ancora rilasciato prodotto da T3, chiamato “Terrasse 3” – un vino che varrà la pena cercare. Il team di Montrose ha sottolineato come l’appellazione abbia visto meno pioggia tra il 1° agosto e l’8 settembre rispetto a quelle più a sud, ricevendo solo 50 mm in questo periodo critico (contro 80 mm per Margaux e 120 mm per Pessac-Léognan), qualcosa che hanno ritenuto fondamentale per il loro successo. 
 Calon-Ségur è stata una delle diverse tenute che hanno scelto di abbandonare l’organico quest’anno, usando trattamenti convenzionali tra il germogliamento e la fioritura, prima di tornare al loro regime normale, consentendo loro di ottenere la stessa resa del 2023 a 45 hl/ha (contro 29 hl/ha a Cos d’Estournel, che ha proseguito il percorso verso la certificazione biologica). Il Direttore Tecnico Vincent Millet – alla guida dell’intero portafoglio di tenute di Calon, incluso Ch. le Prieuré a Saint-Emilion e Vray Croix de Gay a Pomerol – ha osservato come il Cabernet Sauvignon a maturazione più tardiva sia stato particolarmente delicato quest’anno, rendendo la Riva Sinistra più impegnativa della Destra nell’annata. 
 I nostri preferiti a Saint-Estèphe: Montrose Pauillac 
 Pauillac ha avuto la resa più bassa di qualsiasi comune della Riva Sinistra quest’anno, con una media nell’appellazione di 29,5 hl/ha (contro una media ventennale di 45,7 hl/ha). Tra le tenute, le cifre sono variate enormemente – dal minuscolo 11 hl/ha prodotto a Ch. Latour (un livello più tipico di Sauternes) ai 33 hl/ha di Ch. Lafite Rothschild, per esempio, guardando a due tenute che lavorano in biologico. Giugno è stato più secco qui che altrove, il che significa che le vigne hanno iniziato a soffrire di stress idrico prima – con alcune proprietà che hanno persino affermato di aver visto lo sviluppo delle viti fermarsi in agosto, con le prime piogge a fine mese come gradita tregua. 
 La vendemmia qui si è protratta per i primi 10 giorni di ottobre, con la botrite che ha influito in modo significativo sulle rese. Pichon Baron ha stimato di aver perso circa 10 hl/ha per marciume – solo uno dei sacrifici che hanno reso il 2024 un’annata così costosa da produrre. I vini risultanti tendono ad avere quote più alte di Cabernet Sauvignon, e variano sia nello stile che nella qualità. In generale, si tratta di Pauillac di stile più leggero, senza la fermezza o la potenza che questa appellazione può spesso offrire. Sebbene alcuni non abbiano sufficiente concentrazione o struttura, i migliori hanno la tipica grafite di Pauillac, completata da floreali più delicati, frutto croccante, una qualità salina e tannini fini. 
 L’annata segna anche i 100 anni di Batailley sotto la famiglia Borie-Castéja, meritando un’etichetta commemorativa per questo Claret di riferimento, oltre a un formato speciale Marie-Jeanne. 
 I nostri preferiti a Pauillac: Batailley, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Comtesse, Pontet-Canet Saint-Julien 
 Ai Chx Léoville e Langoa Barton, Damien Barton Sartorius ha paragonato il 2024 alla corsa di una maratona – faticosa, ma soddisfacente, e che ti lascia pronto a iscriverti alla prossima. La resa media per l’appellazione è stata leggermente superiore a quella di Pauillac, con 32,5 hl/ha – comunque quasi il 25% in meno rispetto alla media trentennale. Come più a nord, tuttavia, la media è solo una media: Beychevelle ha raccolto a 43 hl/ha, mentre la selezione ha portato la resa a 23,6 hl/ha a Ducru-Beaucaillou (con il team che ha scartato quasi 10 hl/ha), e le cifre sono variate in modo significativo tra le tenute. 
 A Beychevelle, Philippe Blanc ha spiegato come, dopo appena 4 mm di pioggia tra il 1° e il 28 agosto, la pioggia sia ricominciata e non si sia più fermata. Il loro Merlot è stato maggiormente colpito dalla peronospora e quindi l’assemblaggio è più alto in Cabernet Sauvignon (55%) – qualcosa riscontrato anche altrove. La cattiva fioritura e la conseguente colatura hanno comportato grappoli più spargoli, ha spiegato Barton Sartorius, qualcosa che ritiene li abbia davvero aiutati a evitare una significativa pressione di botrite a fine stagione. 
 La dimensione più piccola di Saint-Julien fa sì che sia un po’ più coerente di Pauillac, tuttavia non è del tutto uniforme. Il frutto tende a essere un po’ più dolce, pur restando sullo spettro del rosso piuttosto che del nero, i vini offrono un’acidità brillante e i migliori tannini fini e buon equilibrio, con il rovere perfettamente integrato. 
 I nostri preferiti a Saint-Julien: Ducru-Beaucaillou, Léoville Barton Margaux 
 Sebbene nessuna appellazione sia coerente nel 2024, Margaux ha prodotto vini particolarmente impressionanti. Le precipitazioni potrebbero essere state più alte qui che più a nord, ma il microclima leggermente più caldo e i suoli poco profondi hanno forse permesso alle uve di maturare prima e più pienamente. Ci sono ancora vini leggeri e taglienti, tuttavia realtà come Palmer, Margaux e Rauzan-Ségla hanno prodotto vini tra i migliori dell’annata. 
 Ch. Margaux ha indicato la fioritura precoce come un vantaggio significativo nell’annata – “una benedizione”, nelle parole di Aurélien Valance. Il 2024 avrebbe dovuto essere l’anno finale della conversione biologica a Ch. Rauzan-Ségla, e quando la pressione della peronospora è aumentata, il team ha discusso seriamente se perseverare o meno. Con l’approvazione dei proprietari, hanno deciso che a lungo termine fosse la scelta giusta continuare – sapendo che avrebbe significato un sacrificio in resa (con un raccolto finale di 30 hl/ha), ma sarebbe stato anche il loro primo vino certificato biologico. Il team di Palmer – da lungo tempo biodinamico – ha dovuto effettuare fino a 10 trattamenti a mano, impossibilitato a portare i trattori tra le vigne. 
 Comunque lo si spieghi, i risultati qui parlano da soli – con vini che combinano graziosi, inebrianti floreali con frutto dolce e soffice, oltre a tannini fini ma persistenti, cipriati: vini seri che meriterebbero considerazione in qualsiasi annata. Questa è stata anche l’unica appellazione in cui i secondi vini – come Alter Ego de Palmer e Pavillon Rouge – hanno mostrato una qualità reale. 
 I nostri preferiti a Margaux: Brane-Cantenac, Giscours, Palmer, Margaux, Rauzan-Ségla Graves + Pessac-Léognan 
 Le rese per i rossi a Pessac-Léognan sono state – in modo insolito per l’anno – nella media. I bianchi sono discussi separatamente sotto, ma i rossi di Graves e Pessac-Léognan sono stati vari quanto altrove. Ci sono, tuttavia, alcuni vini affascinanti e alcuni molto impressionanti che smentiscono la reputazione dell’annata. 
 Questa regione meridionale ha visto più pioggia in agosto, non beneficiando forse dello stress idrico che è stato così importante altrove – ma la pioggia in quel mese non è stata eccessiva, solo in linea con la norma. A Smith Haut Lafitte, settembre ha visto più di tre volte la pioggia media (164 mm contro 48 mm), rendendo la vendemmia tutt’altro che facile. 
 Sebbene Carmes Haut-Brion abbia raccolto 40 hl/ha, ha vinificato solo 24 hl/ha – un altro esempio della selezione estrema messa in atto quest’anno dalle tenute focalizzate sulla qualità. Guillaume Pouthier – che offre sempre una prospettiva unica su un’annata – sta facendo qualcosa di diverso nell’affinamento quest’anno, riducendo la temperatura della cantina da 16°C a 12°C durante i due anni di élevage, per preservare il profilo fruttato del vino e favorire la precipitazione tartarica, riducendo così il livello di acidità. Il tempo dirà come funzionerà, quindi sarà affascinante degustare di nuovo il vino in bottiglia. 
 Domaine de Chevalier ha prodotto vini particolarmente impressionanti quest’anno e, sebbene lavorino da lungo tempo in biologico e biodinamico, quest’anno hanno preso la difficile decisione di usare trattamenti convenzionali – qualcosa che è stato premiato, con rese generose (48 hl/ha) e qualità molto elevata. 
 I nostri preferiti in Graves + Pessac-Léognan: Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Domaine de Chevalier, La Mission Haut-Brion Bianchi secchi 
 Alcuni parlano in estasi dei bianchi secchi del 2024 – e, sebbene ci siano assolutamente bianchi brillanti, la qualità è ben lontana dall’essere uniforme. 
 Le prime uve di Sauvignon Blanc sono state raccolte a Sauternes il 20 agosto, sebbene la maggior parte dei produttori con cui abbiamo parlato abbia vendemmiato tra la fine di agosto e l’inizio di settembre, con l’ultimo Sémillon portato in cantina il 23 settembre. Le rese sono state da medie a generose, con la peronospora molto meno problematica – 30 hl/ha a Margaux, 32 hl/ha a Smith Haut Lafitte, 38 hl/ha per Haut-Brion e La Mission Haut-Brion, 48 hl/ha a Domaine de Chevalier, per esempio, mentre sulla Riva Destra la scuderia Lafleur ha portato in cantina circa 40 hl/ha e il team di Nicolas Thienpont ha raccolto rispettivamente 43 hl/ha e 47 hl/ha ad Alcée e Charmes-Godard. 
 Le condizioni più fresche hanno preservato una spina dorsale di acidità nei vini, con pH conseguentemente bassi – analiticamente parlando, i vini hanno l’acidità più alta dal 2014. Gli aromatici sono precisi, dominati dal verde piuttosto che dal frutto a nocciolo, e certamente non all’estremità più tropicale dello spettro. Se mai, alcuni vini possono risultare un po’ verdi o esili. Come ha spiegato il Direttore Tecnico di Smith Haut Lafitte, Fabien Teitgen, la sfida era ottenere una maturità che rivestisse l’acido dell’annata, la polpa che completasse lo scheletro. La proprietaria Florence Cathiard ritiene che il risultato sia “uno dei [loro] migliori bianchi”. Allo stesso modo a Ch. Margaux, hanno fatto un po’ più di bâtonnage per dare peso al Pavillon Blanc – ed è una delle stelle dell’anno. 
 In alcuni, si avverte l’eccesso d’acqua della stagione di crescita – le rese generose sfociano in vini che non hanno sufficiente concentrazione. Il Sauvignon Blanc sembra essersela cavata meglio del Sémillon, più suscettibile al marciume e più difficile da portare a maturità fenolica – e molti dei nostri preferiti erano puro Sauvignon, o fortemente guidati dalla varietà. 
 I paragoni sono stati vari – sebbene il 2021 fosse comune per la spina acida e le condizioni più fresche. A Lafleur, Omri Ram è convinto che il 2024 Les Champs Libres sia uno dei loro migliori, posizionandosi comodamente accanto al 2023 e al 2021. A Ch. Margaux, Aurélien Valance ha guardato a un’annata sorprendente – la calda stagione 2018, ma in cui il vino ha un’impronta salina simile a quella riscontrata nel 2024. 
 I nostri preferiti: Charmes-Godard, De Fieuzal Blanc, Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, Haut-Brion Blanc, Les Champs Libres e Grand Village Blanc, Pavillon Blanc du Ch. Margaux Sauternes + Barsac 
 È facile presumere che, poiché pioggia e marciume hanno minacciato il raccolto nel 2024, sia stato perfetto per i vini dolci di Sauternes e Barsac: ma sono necessarie condizioni molto specifiche perché si instauri la muffa nobile, e se non vengono soddisfatte si ottiene marciume grigio – entrambi causati dallo stesso fungo, Botrytis cinerea. Il primo passaggio a Sauternes tendeva a svolgersi a fine settembre, con condizioni alternate di bagnato e asciutto che incoraggiavano lo sviluppo della muffa nobile dall’inizio di ottobre. Ma le squadre hanno dovuto combattere anche marciume grigio e acescenza – e un alto grado di selezione è stato fondamentale. A La Tour Blanche, hanno prodotto appena 3 hl/ha per il loro Grand Vin, una resa minuscola che eguaglia quella del 2021. 
 Le uve che sono arrivate in vasca offrivano livelli di acidità elevati, aromaticità precise, ma non la lussureggiante concentrazione delle annate davvero migliori. In base alle nostre degustazioni, i vini risultanti sono da buoni a molto buoni, se non proprio eccezionali, ma possono avere particolare appeal per i consumatori che preferiscono uno stile di vino dolce più leggero – con acidità più brillante e livelli di zucchero residuo leggermente inferiori. Sono vibranti e puri, con molta concentrazione, sebbene non così edonistici come gli anni più celebrati – e saranno approcciabili in una fase più precoce della loro vita.

Bordeaux 2024: l'annata per comune

Quando Alain Hudelot si ritirò nel 2008, fu suo nipote a prendere le redini della tenuta di famiglia, il Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat. Charles van Canneyt – allora appena ventenne e fresco di studi enologici – si ritrovò improvvisamente a gestire 10 ettari di vigneti e un’intera cantina. Ma non era un ventenne qualunque. Gradualmente modernizzando le attrezzature della tenuta e perfezionando la vinificazione (in particolare moderando l’estrazione), trasformò la reputazione del domaine. In breve tempo divenne noto come una delle stelle emergenti della Borgogna, con Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat presto tra i nomi più rispettati della regione. Non incline alla compiacenza, nel 2012 avviò un’etichetta négoce, offrendo un’ulteriore via per gli amanti della Borgogna di accedere al suo talento enologico. Oggi, insieme alla moglie Anne-Sophie, ha intrapreso una nuova sfida, acquistando una nuova proprietà: il Domaine des Chézeaux. Probabilmente non conoscerete il nome di questa tenuta di Gevrey-Chambertin, ma quasi certamente ne conoscerete i vigneti. La storia del Domaine des Chézeaux Il Domaine des Chézeaux fu creato da François Mercier nel 1982, anche se la famiglia possedeva vigneti a Gevrey-Chambertin dal 1928. Il nome della tenuta deriva dal Clos des Chézeaux, il vigneto recintato accanto al domaine. La famiglia era proprietaria terriera più che vinicola, quindi tutti i vigneti erano affittati – en métayage – ad altri produttori. Questa pratica è comune in Borgogna: i vignaioli che affittano i vigneti li gestiscono tutto l’anno e producono il vino, cedendo una parte della produzione (spesso circa un terzo) al proprietario come affitto. La storica tenuta crebbe dai possedimenti originari e, dal 1994, contava circa quattro ettari. I vigneti erano divisi tra tre produttori: Domaine Ponsot (poi Laurent Ponsot), René Leclerc e Domaine Berthaut (poi Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet). Ponsot affittava il lotto originale di 0,89 ettari di Griotte-Chambertin, così come i parcelle di Clos Saint-Denis*, Chambertin e Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Charmes. Domaine Berthaut affittava due Premier Cru di Gevrey-Chambertin (Les Cazetiers e Lavaux-Saint-Jacques) e i parcelle del villaggio, incluso il Clos des Chézeaux. Pur essendo tecnicamente un monopole, Berthaut non possedendo il terreno non poteva rivendicarne tale status. Prima della vendemmia 1994, la famiglia Mercier acquistò un altro lotto di Griotte-Chambertin, 0,68 ettari appartenuti a Suzanne Thomas di Thomas Bassot, ottenendo il maggior possedimento di questo Grand Cru. La famiglia Esmonin coltivava già le vigne, vendendo parte dei frutti a Jadot; i Mercier affittarono poi il lotto a René Leclerc (pur continuando la vinificazione di alcune bottiglie da parte della famiglia Esmonin fino al 1999). Una parte dei vini finiti era imbottigliata con l’etichetta Domaine des Chézeaux, ma identica a quella dei produttori Ponsot, Leclerc o Berthaut, spesso a un prezzo inferiore. Domaine des Chézeaux oggi Nel 2021 Charles van Canneyt riuscì ad acquistare la tenuta e i suoi prestigiosi vigneti. Con tutti i vigneti sotto contratto en métayage, la sfida successiva fu riottenerli – negoziando con ciascun produttore. Nel 2022 ottenne il monopole Clos des Chézeaux e Premier Cru Les Cazetiers, ma vendette i frutti. Nel 2023, recuperato un lotto di Griotte-Chambertin, realizzò i primi vini dalla proprietà. Nel 2024 riuscì a recuperare tutti i vigneti – aggiungendo Chambertin, Clos Saint-Denis e Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Charmes. Come parte delle negoziazioni, furono venduti i parcelle Lavaux-Saint-Jacques, alcune vigne di Gevrey-Chambertin village e due piccoli lotti di Griotte-Chambertin. I vigneti sono generalmente vecchi in tutta la tenuta, e coltivazione e vinificazione seguono gli stessi metodi di Hudelot-Noëllat: frutti totalmente diraspati e estrazione molto delicata. Le prime annate furono vinificate a Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat (ma affinano nelle cantine del Domaine des Chézeaux) e è iniziata la costruzione di una nuova cantina, prevista per la fine del 2025. Van Canneyt ha già notato una maturazione diversa delle uve a Chézeaux, con cantine fresche e umide che rallentano l’élevage e richiedono meno rabbocco. Prevede quindi di affinare i vini più a lungo rispetto a Hudelot-Noëllat. La tenuta mantiene il nome storico, ma con nuove etichette – per differenziare le bottiglie precedenti all’arrivo di Van Canneyt. Il nome ha la stessa origine di Echezeaux: chesaux – plurale di chesal (dal latino casellum o casalis) – che significa casa o edificio in pietra. I vigneti del Domaine des Chézeaux Oggi la tenuta conta circa tre ettari di vigneti, di cui oltre la metà Grand Cru, distribuiti su sei appellations: Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Chézeaux: monopole di 0,5 ettari, alcune vigne quasi centenarie (piantate nel 1929), su pendio medio esposto sud-est, su suoli profondi argillosi e ghiaiosi. Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Les Cazetiers: 0,216 ettari in due parcelle, nord 0,1615 e sud 0,045 ha. Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Les Charmes: circa 0,6 ha, con ulteriore parcella a Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat. Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru: 0,3776 ha, comparirà nel 2024 con un solo barile, ora reimpiantato fino al 2029. Chambertin Grand Cru: 0,143 ha nel cuore del Grand Cru. Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru: 1,264 ha, il lotto più grande del piccolo Grand Cru, cuore dell’appellation. Focus su Griotte-Chambertin Griotte-Chambertin, o En Griotte, è il più piccolo dei Chambertin Grands Crus (2,69 ha) e tra i più piccoli della Côte d’Or, insieme a La Romanée, La Romanée-Conti e La Grande Rue. Situato sotto Clos de Bèze, con esposizione nord-est, permette maturazioni lente, vini delicati, aromatici e profumati, meno muscolosi rispetto al tipico Gevrey-Chambertin. Suoli ghiaiosi e calcarei con argilla a pendio. Domaine des Chézeaux è il maggiore proprietario (1,246 ha, quasi metà del vigneto). Altri proprietari: Joseph Drouhin, Fourrier, Claude Dugat, Marchand Frères, Joseph Roty, Duroché, Laurent Ponsot e un investitore che affitta il lotto a Cécile Tremblay. L’origine del nome è dibattuta: “griotte” (ciliegia amarena) o “criotte” (piccola pietra calcarea nei suoli). Storia delle etichette Griotte-Chambertin Le bottiglie storiche sono state un segreto per gli insiders, spesso Ponsot o René Leclerc sotto altre etichette. 1982–1993: unico lotto di Griotte-Chambertin, affittato a Ponsot. 1994: prima annata con secondo lotto, affittato a René Leclerc, blendato con il primo. 1995–2001: due imbottigliamenti identici senza indicazione del produttore. Dal 2002: produttore indicato sulle etichette. Fino al 2004 due bottiglie, dal 2005 René Leclerc solo occasionalmente. Il futuro del Domaine des Chézeaux Nonostante la lunga storia per una tenuta moderna, è solo l’inizio. Con un vignaiolo talentuoso come Charles van Canneyt e vigneti così prestigiosi, la qualità è destinata a crescere e i vini diventeranno presto ambiti quanto quelli di Hudelot-Noëllat. Annate 2023 del Domaine des Chézeaux 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Chézeaux: 0,5 ha, vigne quasi centenarie, frutto rosso intenso, fiori di iris e violetta, tannini fini e salinità nel finale lungo. 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Les Cazetiers: vigne vecchie, vino delicato, minerale e floreale, frutti trasparenti e tannini minerali equilibrati. Cinque barili prodotti. 2023 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru: lotto più grande del Grand Cru, aromatico ed elegante, frutti rossi succosi, spezie dolci e leggeri toni tostati, struttura che richiede tempo. It’s a Pinot Gris of remarkable complexity, hailing from a plot that sits below the Chapelle Saint-Sébastien de Dambach-la-Ville. Ludovic introduced me to Alsatian wines, which I knew little of previously, and I love this cuvée. I remember we had the chance to buy a few magnums a long time ago as they were precisely the birth years of our children (1997, 1999 and 2002). Then I guess I will spoil everyone at home with a beautiful Barolo Giuseppe Mascarello Villero 2017 and Colle Vota Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2018 from my dear friend Cristiana Tiberio. She makes very few bottles of this very elegant and vibrant wine, which is among my favourite reds.”  2021 La Morandina Moscato d’Asti – chosen by Donald Edwards, Head Sommelier at La Trompette, London  “Beyond the best white Burgundy I can lay my grubby mits on, I’ll be cracking the second bottle on a case of La Morandina’s 2021 Moscato d’Asti – part of a new festive tradition. Back when my wine appreciation was still protean, I heard a rumour that Moscato d’Asti – the sweet fizzy floral stuff that we sold in my Glasgow Oddbins – ages magnificently. Twenty or so years later, I’m the Head Sommelier at La Trompette, hosting a big Piedmont-themed wine lunch. Barolos and Barbarescos aplenty litter the room, but the wine that stops me in my tracks? A 2013 Moscato d’Asti from Giuseppe Vajra. It was phenomenal, still gleefully tasty, but now with a touch of extra weight, more waxy lime skin and late-evening summer flowers, heady in its bouquet. Here she was, my white whale, and, boy, she didn’t disappoint.  “Last December, visiting La Morandina in Asti, I asked whether they had anything with a bit of age and lo! a 15-year-old magnum appeared. My stars had aligned for a second time – the wine equally lovely, offering a bit more exotic spice, cardamom and coriander seed along with the sweet creamy lime zest. Crucially, this time I could see the germ of a plan. Each year, I would buy a cast of Moscato d’Asti, building a reserve of Moscato to steadily enjoy over the coming years. I’ll be the Christmas king of deliciously sweet floral fizz. We also really like the new style introduced by Raphaël since he took over this magnificent estate. Then Trévallon: my grandfather Georges from the south of France was an unconditional fan of the estate, and during my childhood there was always a bottle on festive tables (for birthdays, Christmas, New Year, etc) – so this will be a little wink to him. Then last, a bottle of Côte-Rôtie La Landonne by Jean-Michel Gérin. Few people have been lucky enough to be as immersed in Burgundy’s finest wines as Martin Donatsch. His father bought a pallet of top Burgundy, including those of Domaine de la Romanée Conti (DRC) and Armand Rousseau, every year from the early 1970s onwards. Martin’s birth in 1978 – a fantastic vintage in Burgundy – only encouraged his father to buy more, and Martin, now in his early 40s, has been enjoying wines from the family collection ever since. Just last week, he uncorked a 1978 DRC Echézeaux. This immersion has provided him with an extraordinary understanding of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir – something that has doubtless helped him become one of the world’s great emerging winemaking talents. Donatsch is one of a small number of producers growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and the native Completer grape in Bündner Herrschaft in Switzerland. This tiny Swiss valley, for the time being, remains largely unknown – but, as Donatsch certainly believes, it may just be one of the world’s last great regions for fine wine production.The altitude (500 to 700 metres above sea-level) sees the vines flower a week later than is typical in Burgundy, yet picking dates are three to four weeks later. This provides a much longer growing season, allowing for complex flavours and aromas to develop in the grapes. Despite the altitude, the grapes reach good levels of ripeness thanks to the warm, dry wind – known locally as a “foehn”, that sweeps through the valley. Unlike Burgundy, autumns here are dry, so there is rarely pressure to pick before rain arrives, allowing for additional hang-time. The altitude keeps the acidity high, offsetting the naturally slightly higher alcohol (typically around 14%), meaning the wines never feel overly alcoholic. While Bündner Herrschaft has been home to Pinot Noir since the 15th century, Donatsch – now in the hands of the fifth generation – has pioneered the quality revolution in the region. Martin’s father Thomas Donatsch was not only the first to – then illegally – plant Chardonnay in 1975, but also the first to introduce French barriques to Switzerland, influenced by his vigneron friend André Noblet, the winemaker at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti from 1945 to 1986. In the early 1970s, Thomas – a young 20-year-old about to take on the family winery – set off to learn from the best. Obsessed with Burgundy from a young age, he knocked on the door unannounced at Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. In a fortuitous set of circumstances, Noblet had just returned from his first ever holiday (in Gran Canaria) and the first extended time away from his beloved wines. He had missed his wine cellar so much during the trip, he couldn’t wait to return. Finding the young Donatsch sitting by the door and desperate to reacquaint himself with his wines, Noblet invited Thomas to spend the afternoon with him tasting the different cuvées from barrel. Martin believes his dad gained Noblet’s trust by initially criticising DRC’s Montrachet 1968. Tasting the wine Donatsch reportedly said, “There is no way this wine could come from the great Montrachet!” A little precocious, perhaps: fortunately Noblet agreed it wasn’t his finest vintage, but the result of experiments in the winery. It was the beginning of a lifelong friendship, with Donatsch returning to the DRC cellars every year. On each visit, Noblet would always pour him a glass of Montrachet 1968 and ask his opinion before tasting any of the other wines. It wasn’t long before Donatsch was buying a pallet of Grand Cru Burgundy every year (at that time a bottle of La Tâche was just over £35 a bottle). Noblet also started to help Donatsch improve his Pinot Noir – first by giving Thomas his first three French barriques. These weren’t just any old barrels though, they had previously held La Tâche and were made by François Frères – who at the time had just two customers, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Henri Boillot. Donatsch took the barrels back to Switzerland, and the winery has been using François Frères barriques ever since. I asked Martin why the introduction of French barriques in Switzerland was such a revolution for the region. At the time, he says, the Swiss wine schools were obsessed with cleanliness – teaching the importance of filtering wines, using protective winemaking methods and using stainless steel tanks even for the red wines. The use of barrels was the opposite; it meant no additional filtering and a more oxidative environment. Donatsch believes the introduction of barriques around the world revolutionised fine wine. Angelo Gaja was the first to do it in Italy; Torres the first in Spain; Mondavi in the US; and Keller in Germany. But Thomas Donatsch was doing this 10 years before any of them, thanks to the influence of André Noblet, as well as Jean-Bernard Delmas – the winemaker at Château Haut-Brion, another of Thomas Donatsch’s influential friends.  Speaking with Martin Donatsch, you can’t help but feel he has got all his priorities in order. The small size of his winery means he can control every aspect of production, while benefitting from the variety that a life in wine can offer. Producing just 35,000 bottles a year means that when he is not in the vineyard tending his crop, he is in the winery, or fulfilling orders and redesigning his website (graphic design is another passion of his). Being one of the country’s most prestigious winemakers he sells his wine into the country’s top restaurants and luxury hotels, who can’t get enough of his wine. Donatsch’s annual release of wines sells out in just hours. While this is a great sign of his talents, it is also why many people outside of Switzerland have never heard of, let alone experienced, the world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the winery. Despite the demand for the Donatsch wines, there are no plans to expand: firstly because the authorities won’t allow it, but second because Martin loves the “human” size of the business and doesn’t want to lose that. Martin is, however, keen for more people outside of Switzerland to taste them. Beyond the tiny volumes that make it as far as export, to source these extraordinary wines you’ll have to (when one can) visit the winery yourself. The high life: Martin Donatsch

Burgundy’s vignerons are currently preoccupied with the 2024 vintage – one that has been challenging, with warm, wet weather and high disease pressure, leading to a relatively late harvest in comparison to recent years. But we’ll soon be back on the ground, tasting the 2023s with producers. We’ll be providing a full, detailed report as soon as we can, but – in the meantime – here’s a preview of what to expect from the year.   The 2023 growing season in Burgundy  The growing season wasn’t – for once – hugely eventful in 2023, until the harvest, at least. The winter was warm and dry, delaying budbreak until early April and allowing the region to escape the dangers of frost. The warm weather continued, with a quick and even flowering – promising a generous and homogenous crop. Across the season, rainfall was average for the region. Showers seemed to arrive when needed to support vine growth, with some storms in June, but any disease pressure was easily handled by producers. There was a little localised hail in July, with some damage reported in Meursault.  The first grapes were brought in from 25th August (starting with those destined for Crémant de Bourgogne). Fruit destined for still wines started coming in from the very end of August: 29th for Alvina Pernot, Au Pied du Mont Chauve and Louis Jadot following on 4th September, and Samuel Billaud in Chablis on 11th, with all the fruit in by the end of September. Just as harvest got underway, however, temperatures soared: making for incredibly challenging conditions. As Frédéric Barnier at Jadot explained, it was the first time they’d had to pick in the middle of a heatwave – but was, as he said, “probably our future”. The challenge was largely human: ensuring the safety of those out in the vines picking. There were widespread reports after five people died further north in Champagne due to the strenuous conditions. Some producers harvested at night, or as early as possible once dawn broke, ensuring they stopped before the heat of the day set in, to reduce the risk to pickers. Barnier explained that, although challenging for the team, the hot spell was helpful for the reds. While they picked the whites, the conditions allowed the Pinot Noir to concentrate and gain density, as well as reducing the sometimes-extreme volumes.  The yields were so generous (thanks to the even flowering, warm conditions and plentiful rainfall) that green harvesting was key. Frédéric Weber of Bouchard explained how the vineyards were “a wall of grapes” and they had to drop half the crop. Faiveley green harvested across 80% of its vines. Nevertheless, producers saw record volumes, even on normally low-yielding old vines. At Heresztyn-Mazzini, they reported finding single bunches on their old vines that weighed half a kilo, and Cyril Audoin found he was at the legal maximum even on his oldest plots. At Domaine des Lambrays, Jacques Devauges reported that there’s a third more of their Grand Cru Clos des Lambrays in the vintage, with an impressive 40hl/ha. There were even reports of producers reaching 100hl/ha in potential crop.  Although most vignerons saw even higher yields than 2022, that wasn’t universally the case – as at Lamarche and Hubert Lamy, who both brought in slightly smaller crops than the year before. Even at these addresses, however, producers are happy to have full cellars – and with high-quality wines too.  Key decisions for Burgundy 2023  “It was hard to make bad wines in 2022, but was very easy to take wrong decisions in 2023,” said Louis-Michel Liger-Belair of Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair when we visited him last year.  Harvest dates are always important when it comes to the pernickety Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but there were many elements to consider in this vintage. Space was a challenge for some producers, on a purely practical level, needing the requisite number of tanks at the right time to allow them to harvest at the right time. The hot end to the season risked losing freshness, so preserving acidity – especially in the whites – was key. As mentioned above, managing the crop-load was important, balancing quantity and quality. Yields were less of a concern when it came to the white grapes, as Chardonnay is better able to manage high yields, however there was potential concern over concentration for the reds. Good producers, of course, are well aware of the need to balance the vine to avoid any potential dilution – and handled the season to harvest a good crop of high-quality fruit.  With the Chardonnay, Barnier explained how at Jadot they blocked the malolactic on some lots to retain freshness; while for the reds, sorting was important (to remove any shrivelled berries) and saignée common. At Jadot, they bled off between 10 and 20% of the juice. We haven’t yet spoken to many producers regarding élevage; with higher volumes, however, we anticipate that there may be higher portions of new oak at some addresses, while others will have looked to alternative vessels to complement their “standard” portion of wood.  The style of the wines in 2023  So far, we’ve tasted very little – only the whites from Samuel Billaud and Alvina Pernot (both of which were very impressive – find more on these below), and we’ll be reporting more once we’ve been out to taste more comprehensively. We can, however, tell you what producers are saying – and what we’re expecting based on the growing season and our conversations so far.  Following on from the good yields of 2022, 2023 was another plentiful vintage – allowing producers to replenish stocks, and cellars are looking much less bare. With the warm weather and good rainfall, the wines are riper than the 2022s, quite generous in style, with an approachability that means they will drink well in youth – yet don’t let that fool you into thinking they don’t also have good acidity.  We have heard rumours of heterogeneity, and – as ever – producer decisions are key in determining success; with the human hand likely more important than site this year. Those that over-cropped risked producing dilute wines – but they are undoubtedly in the minority, and lesser names. That said, from what we’ve tasted and heard, there is good consistency across sites – from village through to Premier and Grand Cru, and across the Côte d’Or.  Alcohol levels are average for the region – sitting between 12% for Bourgogne or village wines, and up to 13.5% for some Grands Crus. The reds are not powerhouses; Jean-Marie Fourrier compared them to 2009 for their ripeness and the generous yields, but Barnier at Jadot feels they sit between the 2017s and 2019s in terms of richness, with a “buvabilité” (“drinkability”) that is very appealing. We expect the whites to be particularly strong this year – offering similar acidity levels to 2022, but additional richness.  At Alvina Pernot, it’s brilliant to see the style develop – with a very complete range of effortless composure; we loved all the wines, but the Meursault Perrières was an undeniable highlight. Alvina Pernot and Philippe Abadie love the purity and balance in their wines, and suggest the 2023s are a blend of the 2020 and 2022 vintages, while Barnier points to a vintage somewhere between 2015 and 2018. The 2018 vintage is also the reference point for Samuel Billaud in Chablis, whose wines were already enticingly aromatic in July this year – precise and gourmand, with a satisfying suppleness.  News from the region  Burgundy, more than ever before, is a region constantly shifting, with land changing hands, producers and ranges evolving. Here are some of the key developments to be aware of for the vintage:  William Fèvre: This benchmark Chablis producer was acquired by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (of Ch. Lafite Rothschild fame) and 2023 will be the first vintage under their ownership – although be reassured that longtime winemaker Didier Séguier remains in situ.  Alvina Pernot: Alvina Pernot stepped down from her family estate (Domaine Paul Pernot) in time for the 2023 harvest, to focus exclusively on her project with husband Philippe Abadie. There is also a new Premier Cru in the line-up this year – Puligny-Montrachet Champs Gains.  Henri Boillot: The 2023 is the 40th vintage that Henri Boillot has produced of their monopole Clos de la Mouchère – a site to which he is rightfully attached. He also noted that the range is around 90% domaine in the vintage.  Hubert Lamy: The 2023 vintage is the first to be made in his new, enlarged cellar.  Charles van Canneyt: The star winemaker behind Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat purchased Domaine des Chézeaux and the 2023 vintage will see the first wines made by him from the estate (under a name that remains to be confirmed). The acquisition brought some prime vineyards, including Griotte-Chambertin, Chambertin, Clos Saint-Denis and Lavaux-Saint-Jacques.  Duroché: The 2023 will be the first vintage of a new Corton from Duroché (half a hectare in Corton Rognet). Technically it is négoce, but is domaine in all but name as they are farming the site themselves.  Olivier Bernstein: Although the Bernstein team has long been farming organically, the 2023 vintage is the first on their path to official certification.  Bouchard Père & Fils: Since Artémis Domaines (the Pinault family of Ch. Latour) purchased the company in 2022, Bouchard has been winding down their négoce operation and the 2023 vintage will be the last for the final few négoce wines, with the range domaine-only from 2024.   What we know so far about Burgundy 2023  A relatively uneventful growing season with a heatwave during harvest  A plentiful crop of good-quality approachable reds and whites  Alcohol levels are average for the region, between 12 and 13.5%  The whites expected to be particularly strong, combining richness and good levels of acidity  The reds seem juicier in style, destined to drink well in their youth and for the medium term  A vintage where producer decisions rather than site seem to have dictated the style of the wines   Keep your eyes peeled for further coverage of the Burgundy 2023 in the coming weeks. South America’s finest Argentina and Chile have rapidly become hotspots for fine wine. Offering high-altitude sites with glorious sunshine, and varied soils, it’s no surprise that some of Bordeaux’s top estates have ventured into the two nations. Cheval Blanc's Argentinian collaboration with Terrazas de los Andes, Cheval des Andes, is unsurprisingly impressive. The estate works with high-altitude sites to produce a Malbec-based blend. The 2018 that is set to be released this year has already been rated highly by James Suckling (98 points), who wrote, “This will be a great wine indeed.” First Growth Ch. Mouton Rothschild works with Concha y Toro in Chile’s Maipo Valley to produce Almaviva – a wine that has, in Suckling’s words, become “a benchmark for the reds of the Andes”. He awarded 97 points to the 2019 and describes it as “extremely perfumed… vertical and integrated”. Bodega Catena Zapata – one of Mendoza’s leading names – will release the 2018 vintage of its top wines, Nicolás Catena Zapata and Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae. The latter is a Malbec from a 1.4-hectare plot which sits at almost 5,000 feet, while Nicolás Catena Zapata is the estate’s flagship wine – and Argentina’s first “Grand Vin”, made with the finest fruit from ungrafted vines on the family’s high-altitude sites. Both have earned high praise with the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutiérrez describing the 2018 as “among the finest vintages for the Mundus Bacillus Terrae” (98 points). The Chadwick family – who own Errázuriz – will also release the 2019 vintages of their top cuvées, Seña and Viñedo Chadwick. Made by Francisco Baettig, these are incredible wines – earning 98 and 99 points from James Suckling, respectively. Last but not least is Clos Apalta, the Chilean estate that produces the finest expression of Carménère in the world. The 2018 is another excellent release, with 98 points from James Suckling. Super Tuscan stars The 2018 vintage in Tuscany was stunning – producing wines of elegance and freshness. While some of the Super Tuscans have already been released, a handful will be available via La Place this month. Masseto – the cult Ornellaia breakout star, described as the “Pétrus of Italy” – and the third vintage of its second wine, Massetino, will be released. Produced in tiny volumes, these extraordinary expressions of Merlot will be in unsurprisingly high demand. Solaia – Tignanello’s sibling from the Antinori stable – is set to be similarly popular, as ever. Giving it 98 points, Antonio Galloni of Vinous wrote, “I can't remember ever tasting a young Solaia with this much sheer appeal and balance in the early going.” The month will also see the latest releases from Bibi Graetz. The artist-turned-winemaker works with old vines and indigenous varieties to produce elegant expressions of Chianti. The 2019 Colore received 99 points from James Suckling who described it as “old-vine magic”, finding the 2019 Testamatta serious and structured (97 points). Cult California September sees a flurry of the Golden State’s most illustrious names hit the market. Opus One – the joint venture between Mondavi and Ch. Mouton Rothschild – is consistently in demand, and no more so for the 2018, with 98 points from Wine Advocate’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW and 99 points from Suckling. Having tasted it ourselves – we can vouch for the elegance of the vintage. It’s also worth paying attention to the new release of Overture (also based in the 2018 vintage), which is undoubtedly the best to date. Keep an eye out for the top-scoring 2018s from Vérité (100 points for La Muse, 98 points for La Joie and 97+ for Le Désir from Wine Advocate); the latest release of Joseph Phelps’ Insignia, the original Napa Valley proprietary red (2018 – with 97+ points from Wine Advocate); the 2019s from L’Aventure – the Pasa Robles estate run by Bordelais expat Stephan Asseo; and the 2017 vintage of Dominus (97+ points from Wine Advocate) – the cult wine from Christian Moueix of Pétrus. The new vintage from Maya Dalla Valle – who trained at Pétrus, Latour, Masseto and more, and is now heading up the family estate, Dalla Valle – is guaranteed to fly. The 2018 Maya has already got a smattering of top scores, with 100 points from Wine Advocate’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, who wrote, “As cerebral as it is downright hedonic, this Maya is simply jaw-dropping.” This year will also see the latest vintage of Beaulieu Vineyard’s Georges de Latour Private Reserve – Napa’s first cult wine, and only its second release via La Place. The 2018 has 98 points from both Vinous and Suckling, with Antonio Galloni describing it as “sensational”. Ex-château classics The September Series isn’t limited to the New World – with a handful of estates in Bordeaux and the Rhône joining in, including the annual release of a ready-to-drink vintage of Ch. Latour, after the First Growth left the en primeur system. This year sees a star-studded vintage, 2005, emerge from the cellars. A vintage that needs little introduction, this wine has unsurprisingly high scores; tasting it earlier this year, Antonio Galloni gave it a perfect 100 points, describing it as “life affirming”. Ch. Palmer will also release 2011; while a less illustrious vintage, Robert Parker described it as the wine of the vintage in Margaux. Cheval Blanc, meanwhile, will release the 2019 vintage of Le Petit Cheval Blanc, the property’s highly desirable white. While normally Ch. d’Yquem would also release a vintage of their sweet wine, they are holding back the 2019, so this year sees only the 2020 vintage of Y d’Yquem (the estate’s dry white) released. Looking across to the Rhône, Ch. de Beaucastel will release the 2019 vintage of their Hommage à Jacques Perrin. This cuvée comes from ancient Mourvèdre vines and is made in tiny volumes. Alistair Cooper MW of jancisrobinson.com describes it as “a powerful thoroughbred”. Top wines from further afield A handful of wines from South Africa and Australia have also made their way onto La Place. The 2018 vintage of Klein Constantia’s Vin de Constance – the iconic sweet wine with a long and fabled history – will be released this year, perhaps a comfort to sweet wine fans who won’t be getting their fix with Yquem. Only scored so far by James Suckling (98-99 points), he rightly acknowledges it as a “unique wine”. Two names from Down Under get their second release via La Place this year. The 2017 vintage of Jim Barry’s The Armagh Shiraz – a Clare Valley legend – will be joined by 2018 Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon, a standard-bearer for Coonawarra. New this year This year sees several new names join the September Series. First up is Peter Michael Winery: founded by Sir Peter Michael CBE in the 1980s, this estate has been championing single-site, elegant wines from its corner of the Knights Valley, on the border of Napa and Sonoma, ever since. The 2018 vintage of the property’s Cabernet blends Les Pavots (from a single plot on the original Knights Valley estate, 97 points from Jeb Dunnuck) and Au Paradis (from a site in Oakville, purchased in 2009, 98 points from Jeb Dunnuck). While Robert Parker has spent much of his time rating wine, he also invested in a property in Oregon with his brother-in-law Michael Etzel. The result is Beaux Frères, now part of the Henriot stable, in Ribbon Vale, which produces world-class Pinot Noir. The 2019 vintage of the two top cuvées – from the Beaux Frères Vineyard and Upper Terrace Vineyard – will hit La Place this year. For the first time, Australia’s most famous estate, Penfolds, will release one of its wines, Bin 169 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. A classic expression of this grape on the region’s terra rossa soils, the 2018 is described as “impressive” by Suckling (97 points). Recently announced is the first vintage of Yjar – a new ultra-premium Rioja from Telmo Rodríguez. It’s described as an “outstanding first bottling” (James Suckling, 97 points) and “a wine that transcends the vintage” (Luis Gutiérrez from Wine Advocate, 96 points). Lo stoccaggio viene addebitato a 40 HKD per cassa da 12 bottiglie al mese. Si applica una tariffa minima mensile di stoccaggio di 80 HKD, che copre fino a 24 bottiglie.

Selezionando la spedizione tramite terzi, ti assumi la piena responsabilità del rispetto di tutte le normative e autorizzi Vinfolio a trasferire gli articoli alla parte indicata nelle tue istruzioni. Gli articoli spediti tramite terzi rimarranno nel loro imballaggio originale.

Gli orari di ritiro sono tra le 8:30 e le 12:00 e tra le 13:30 e le 16:30, dal lunedì al venerdì. I vini al Will Call che non vengono ritirati entro 10 giorni lavorativi saranno trasferiti in deposito e soggetti a una tariffa di stoccaggio di 1,50 $ per bottiglia.

Gli articoli verranno reperiti e spediti al nostro deposito di vini all'avanguardia per la migliore conservazione possibile, dove potrai organizzare il ritiro presso il nostro indirizzo di magazzino a Napa.
