The 1997 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is an absolute joy. I suppose it doesn’t have the complexity, density or pedigree of the very best years, and yet there is something about its balance that is so compelling. Worn-in leather, tobacco, spice and coffee are signatures of a wine that is nearing maturity. I would not push my luck on aging though. This was the first vintage made in new conical steel tanks.

The dark ruby/purple-hued 1997 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio offers a stunning aromatic display of jammy black fruits, balsam wood, dried herbs, licorice, and a Provencal/garrigue smell. Some peppery notes even came through. Full-bodied, concentrated, and fat, with high glycerin levels, a chewy, plush, succulent personality, sweet tannin, gobs of fruit, and a long, heady finish, this 1997 is already disarmingly delicious, but should age nicely for 12-15 years. Dark garnet-ruby. Penetrating aromas of plum, wild cherry and light oak: offers the customary force and power of this wine on the nose. Intensely flavored, concentrated and dense, with the wine fruit and spices warmed by the full alcohol. Finishes very long, with the tannins beginning to round out.
