1980 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio

The 1980 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggio is full of surprises. Haunting in its aromatic presence, the 1981 offers up kirsch, sweet spice, leather, rose petal and blood orange, with the intoxicating inner sweetness of a wine that is fully mature. Best of all, the 1980 has the depth to continue to drink well for another decade or so. Harvest took place in late October and into November, unheard of today. This was not an especially highly regarded vintage, and yet Monsanto’s 1980 Il Poggio is truly divine.
