Unusually hot vintage which is very clear in the harvest date, Sep 17. Ten years ago so early would have been unthinkable (Vega Sicilia has usually been Oct). Our objective was to avoid overripe aromas and heaviness. They tried to optimise fresh fruity aromas. 14-14.5% (usually 13.5-14.5%). 22 hl/ha. Price has gone up quite a bit for the 2003. Mid crimson and relatively light aromas with just a hint of greenness. A hint of oak on the nose still. Certainly no shortage of acidity and nice balance. Lots of tannins and a light chew on the finish. Impressive length. (JR)

Deep violet. Pungent oak spices accent ripe cherry and plum preserve on the nose, with sweet vanilla and mocha notes to the fore today. Lush and creamy, with ripe dark berry flavors and a strong, building kirsch quality. Weighty and powerful on the broad, sweet finish. Shows the vintage but the ripeness is well managed and there are no rough edges, giving this immediate appeal.
The good news is that the 2003 Alion is even better than the 2002. It has a similar personality but with more depth and concentration as well as structure. The ripe tannins suggest much more will be revealed with another 6-8 years in the bottle. It will drink well for 15+ years thereafter. Importer: Christopher Cannan, Europvin; www.europvin.com
