Punteggio 17/20 · Da bere 2012-2020, Jancis Robinson MW, Aug 2015

Some vines were badly affected by spring frosts and the crop was shrunk, but summer was warm and dry, even if September brought some rain. Dark crimson.Savoury balsam notes on the nose. Very fine, well integrated, savoury fruit with some dusty tannins still on the finish – they may always be there right up to when the fruit fades. But this is an interesting, distinctive wine that could only be Tuscan. Definitely needs food. (JR)

Meaty and peppery, grainy tannins that enwrap the dark cherry fruit beautifully. Lots of core fruit still in evidence, with savoury character still emerging and bitter-chocolate character on the finish. (RH)

Readers looking for a superb Tuscan wine from the 2001 vintage that won’t break the bank should consider the 2001 Carbonaione. Tasted from magnum, this layered, sumptuous beauty explodes from the glass with vibrant layers of dark fruit, spices and tobacco. Glorious and expansive on the palate, it is a beautiful wine in every way. (Tasted from magnum).

Vittorio Fiore virtually invented the profession of consulting oenologist in Tuscany in the mid-1970s, but he has also been producing his own wines at Poggio Scalette in Greve in Chianti since the late 1980s. Jurij Fiore is now on board to give him a hand, and the 2001 Carbonaione from this father-son team is simply outstanding, bursting with ripe and luscious berry fruit and chocolate, a dense and weighty texture, and much softness and complexity as well with its full range of spices, herbs, and minerals on the expanding, mouth-filling finish. Power and poise to the highest degree, and a wine which will still be drinking well in 2020. Importer: Winebow, New York, NY; tel. (212) 255-9414
