Punteggio 91-93/100 · Da bere 2030-2050, Neal Martin, May 2026

The 2025 La Louvière has a pretty nose with blackberry, boysenberry and violet scents, showing a little more restraint and composure than some other Pessac reds. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite structured, but I appreciate the focus and tension that floods through on the finish. Three samples were tasted and the last showing the most promise.

A Merlot-dominant blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon that will spend 12 months in 40% new oak with 15% aged in terracotta amphora, the 2025 Château La Louviere offers beautiful cassis and lively blue fruits as well as sappy flowers and violets on the nose. Checking in at 13.5% alcohol, it's medium-bodied on the palate, nicely concentrated, with notable purity, fine tannins, and outstanding length.

So much class for this estate, with blackberry, subtle dark chocolate and spice aromas that follow through to a medium body with juicy fruit and a firm finish. One of the best in a long time.

The 2025 La Louvière is powerful, dense and quite savory, all qualities that can be appreciated with minimal cellaring. A blast of dark cherry, tobacco, incense, new leather and licorice opens first, followed by dark notes of scorched earth and grilled herbs. There's a lot of wine here.

Wine has been made at this estate since the 1300s, but its modern history begins when the Lurton family purchased it in 1965. The property was in disrepair, but the Lurtons have restored the château, winery and vineyards.
