Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2007-2017, Robert Parker, Dec 2007

Montelena’s non-malolactic Chardonnay hasn’t changed in more than 30 years, and they certainly deserve credit for that. It rarely sees more than 20% new oak, and in certain vintages can age remarkably well. The 2005 exhibits beautiful precision, hints of Granny Smith apples, lemon zest, and a touch of orange rind, with medium body, zesty acidity, but surprising intensity and flavor. I’m sure it will still be humming along 10 or more years from now. Tel. (707) 942-5105; Fax (707) 942-4221

Good bright yellow. Yellow fruits, spearmint and honey on the nose. Juicy and intensely flavored, with very good acid cut to the apple and lemon flavors. Not yet complex but this has density and a silky texture-not to mention firm spine-and should reward a few years of patience. Barrett pointed out that leaf roll virus in one of the chardonnay blocks has the effect of delaying the ripening, allowing the fruit to mature at low sugars levels (in this case, just 21.8o Brix).
