Bright gold. Musky aromas of dried stone fruits, hazelnut and savory minerality, plus a marrowy note that reminded me of Chablis; nothing underripe here! Bright, salty and classically dry, conveying a tactile impression of dry extract. Penetrating acidity nicely frames the concentrated flavors of lemon and orange zest, pear nectar and minerals. This has ripened in the bottle to become exactly what I hoped the best '93s would turn into: an intense, minerally, dry mid-weight Meursault with sex appeal and vibrancy. Finishes with excellent length and mineral lift. Lafon did a lot of lees stirring in '93, a year that featured slow, late malolactic fermentations.

The 1993 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has a generous hazelnut, brioche and adhesive-tinged bouquet that feels quite rich and powerful, not a common feature of the 1993 whites. The palate is well balanced with a faint viscosity. Notes of hazelnut, fennel and smoke lead to a surprisingly deep and voluminous finish, though perhaps it does not quite have the grace of Lafon's other wines from this period. Still, it has aged extremely well and should be consumed in the near future.
