(85% merlot with 15% malbec, from the cool-climate Grace Benoist Ranch in Carneros): Bright ruby-red. Lively aromas of black cherry, blackberry, crushed cassis and menthol, complicated by espresso and game. Smooth, suave and juicy if youthfully tight-knit, with subtle savory and game nuances from the merlot. An attractive blend with well-integrated acidity and a fine dusting of tannins. This is the coolest malbec site in California, according to winemaker Jon Priest, who uses a bit of merlot to give the wine more weight and palate presence. This wine was not made in either 2009 or 2010, as neither variety got ripe enough.
