One of the highlights of the portfolio this year, the 2016 Mâcon-Vergisson La Roche is drinking beautifully, wafting from the glass with notes of white peach, citrus fruit, nutmeg and dried white flowers, subtly framed by new wood. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and textural, with good concentration, tangy and incisive acids and a long, stony finish. It's an incredible value that's well worth seeking out.

(from a more eastern exposure than Pouilly-Fuissé from Vergisson but a similar altitude; aged entirely in barrels, 25% new): Bright yellow. Deep, inviting peach and apple aromas are complicated by a flinty, smoky element. A step up from the Mâcon-Bussières Vignes de Montbrison in density of texture and inner-mouth lift, with the obvious rocky component contributing energy. A lovely salty style with a light touch. The mineral-driven finish features sound acidity and noteworthy lingering spicy lift.
East-facing plot at the top of the Roche de Vergisson surrounded by the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. Very calcareous soil. Free-run juices were barrel fermented (20% new oak). Six months in barrel. Yields were 40% less than normal so the total production was only 250 cases in 2016. A little more mealy than the Mâcon-Bussières, with some apricot fruit. Lots of intensity and impressive length at this price and deliciously crisp. Fine chalky texture. (JH)
