Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2021-2025, Eric Guido, Vinous, Mar 2021

The 2001 Brunello di Montalcino is stunning in the glass, its brilliant, translucent ruby red color on display. A seductive bouquet of cherry, cinnamon, clove and spiced orange lift up, blossoming further to reveal fresh mint and a whiff of sweet white smoke. It’s silky in texture, both feminine and elegant, with an unbelievably pure display of ripe floral-laced strawberries, enlivened by mouthwatering acidity. There’s only the slightest tug of tannin remaining, more of an accent than a statement. This tapers off remarkably spry without any sign of decline after twenty years of maturity. Hints of peach tea, inner rose and a twang of sour citrus lingers for well over a minute in this absolutely glorious expression of mature Brunello. The 2001 Poggio di Sotto was purchased upon release and held in professional storage.

Poggio di Sotto’s 2001 Brunello di Montalcino turns out to be more delicate than I had expected, with gorgeous aromatics and a silky feel.  Over time, the 2001 has come together nicely in bottle, but it is a wine of finesse that is overpowered by the ribeye.

Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2009-2021, Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate, Dec 2006

Poggio di Sotto’s medium-red 2001 Brunello di Montalcino presents an intensely expressive nose of smoke and scorched earth along with layers of sweet dark red fruit that unfold onto the palate with outstanding length, complexity and polish on the finish. It is a deceptively medium-bodied, yet structured Brunello made in a somewhat quirky style. Some readers might find the relatively high levels of volatile acidity off-putting, but I found this wine’s overall balance to be outstanding. Revisited often during the course of several days, it proved to be a very satisfying glass of Brunello. It will require a few years of cellaring and should drink splendidly until at least age 20. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2021. Importer: Robert Chadderdon Selections, New York, NY; tel. (212) 757-8185
