The 1971 Léoville-Poyferré is a poor wine even in the context of a challenging vintage. This ex-château bottle has a nose that is thin and rather volatile, decaying after just five minutes in the glass. The palate is leafy and quite acetic, bitter and harsh on the finish. Not it's finest hour. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at Noble Rot restaurant in Soho.

Fully mature, simple, straightforward, with a bouquet reminiscent of cranberry juice, medium bodied, somewhat compact and lean, this is a pleasant, but hardly inspiring wine. Anticipated maturity: Now-probably in serious decline. Last tasted, 6/79.

Ch. Léoville-Poyferré is a Second Growth Saint-Julien property that was once part of the same estate as Ch. Léoville Barton and Ch. Léoville Las Cases. It has the most complex and varied soils of the three and produces the most voluptuous, seductive style of wine.
