The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Petits Monts 1er Cru shows just a little reduction on the nose, yet there is attractive dark berry fruit here, rose petals and orange pith. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-chiselled tannins, fresh and zesty with a cohesive and quite mineral-driven finish. Plenty of energy in situ. This has a bright future. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Petits Monts is another cuvée that showed especially well, soaring from the glass with scents of cassis, plums and spices, complemented by notions of dark chocolate, grilled squab and creamy new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and fine-boned, with excellent tension at the core despite its rather gourmand personality this year, concluding with a long and saline finish.

No whole bunch. Two 228-litre barrels. Barrel sample. This and Aux Cras are the most behind in their evolution and thus not as easy to taste now. They haven’t yet swallowed their oak, says Liger-Belair. A month ago this wine was closed in on itself, whereas Aux Cras was lively. This is now more expressive and Aux Cras is becoming ‘more civilised’. Deep cherry red. Dark fruit, almost a little bit meaty and savoury. A touch of oak sweetness. Needs longer to swallow the oak. But still has lovely depth of fruit and behind the oak is dark-red fruit purity and a hint of peony. Dry and withheld on the palate. Needs time but it is a beauty. Its face is in shadow at the moment. Chewy, closed and yet so promising. (JH)
